Transcript for Getting Started with Microsoft Word Hello and welcome to our introductory project on using the basic features of Microsoft Word. I am Judy Richardson, your instructor for this project. In every position I've held in my career, from programmer to database analyst to instructor, I've had to communicate with workers, users, students, administrators, and customers. The ability to use word makes written communication easier and more effective. By the end of this project, you will experience a boost in your written communication skills. You will have practiced using some of the basic features of Microsoft Word like adding and formatting text, adding bullet points, inserting an image, and even adding a table. You will do that by producing and saving a document that looks just like this. You will notice that there are two panels on your screen. I will be working on the panel on your right. That is where I will demonstrate and cover your lesson material. Your work will take place in the panel on the left. You can work along with me there and get some real hands on practice with the concepts we cover throughout the project. We will be using the free online version of Microsoft Office 365 Word. However, all of the skills that you learn are applicable on other versions of Word as well. Since this is a beginner level project, you are not expected to have any word experience at all. However, you will need to know how to navigate windows and use your browser. Of course, good keyboarding skills would also be very helpful. But if that's not the case and you find yourself getting behind because you're a little slower on the keyboard, just remember that you can pause the presentation at any point and resume when you've caught up. You will also need to have created a Microsoft Login so that you can log into the free version of Word. You'll find instructions for that in a few moments. Our goal in this first task is to learn how to launch word and how to create and save a word document. Let's get started. You will notice that your browser open to the free office on line for the web page. If you already have a Microsoft account, you can use your account to log in. If you do not have an account, simply click to create an account. The account is free, as is this abbreviated version of Microsoft Office. Pause the project now and resume when you are successfully logged in. Now that you have arrived at the Office Home page, you can see the office components listed down the left hand side of the page. You'll notice, of course, that one of them is Word. Simply click the word icon to launch Word. There it is. Now you'll also notice in the desktop for Word that we have several templates that we could work with. But we're going to start by doing a new blank document. Simply click on new blank document. When you do that, it may ask you, by the way, to verify your password. If it does, just go ahead key your password in. It'll bring you up to the document, the new word document. The word user interface is very typical. It has a menu bar across the top with some options that you've probably seen before. If you were to click on an option on the menu bar as usual, there are some options beneath that that you can use. Each of these menu options has other subcomponents. Let's go back to home. The most important part probably, of the desktop is where you can your data. Here's our work space. This is where we can actually can some text. Let's go ahead and do that. Let's can some text just click in your work space and begin to key in. Let's try sitting in your home now. We'll hit the Enter key to go to the next line. Let's key in the next paragraph. By the way, be sure not to hit the Enter key at the end of each line. Let word wrap your text for you. Remember you can pause this presentation and take your time at the keyboard. Just resume when you're ready. Having a dog is one of life's great pleasures. It is also one of life's big responsibilities. Like children, dogs require regular attention. Notice by the way, if I make a mistake, I just use the backspace key, delete it, and try again, regular attention and feed, which you are always glad to. One of the nice things about word is that if I do make a mistake, it underlines it and read. So I can go back and say, oh, I made a spelling error. And I can even get some suggestions. And none of these are right. So I'm just going to fix this manually because it should say feeding. Okay. Now we have a paragraph again, if you needed to pause for a bit, obviously I haven't spelled this correctly. There we go. If you need to pause, just resume when you get your paragraph keyed in. Now you have a good start in your document. We have added some text and we will be formatting this text in a future task to make it look better. For now, we need to give our document to name and save it. When you use this free version of Word, your document is automatically saved in the cloud on one drive. Let's do this. Let's click the file option in the menu bar. Let's select Save As, We'll select Rename. Because we do want to give it a name other than document. As a matter of fact, let's call this Do we'll make a flyer to advertise dog sitting Flyer. And that's it. I'll click back in my document. And I notice now that up here it says dog sitting. That's it for our first in this task, you launched Word and created and saved your first document. In the next task, we will add more text and begin working with formatting.
