New Year’s Around the World In Puerto Rico, people clean EVERYTHING in their homes so they can start off the year fresh. In Spain, people eat 12 grapes at midnight as the clocks chime 12 times. In Scotland, the first person to enter the house in the new year carries a gift to bring good luck. In Denmark, people throw old dishes at the door of their family member’s houses to get rid of bad spirits. Lunar New Year Celebrated in many East Asian Countries such as China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and more! Lunar New Year is celebrated to bring good luck and a fresh start to the new year. It usually happens during the months of January and February, or during the Winter season. The streets are often decorated with red lanterns and lucky symbols. Parades with dragons and lion dances happen through the streets. Holi Holi is a very fun and colourful festival celebrated in India and other parts of the world. People come together to play with colours by throwing colourful powders and water at each other. People decorate their homes with colourful streamers and flowers. Holi is all about welcoming spring, coming together in love and friendship through singing, dancing and laughing. Holi is usually celebrated during March at the beginning of the Spring season. Easter Easter is a holiday celebrated by many Christians to remember the rebirth of Jesus Christ. People often go to church, read stories from the Bible, and pray together. A popular tradition is hunting for Easter eggs left by the Easter bunny. Many people celebrate the love and hope that Christians believe Jesus brought to them and the World. Easter is often celebrated in April or during the Spring season. Passover Passover or Pesach is a Hebrew holiday celebrated by Jewish people around the World. Passover takes place in March or April, during the Spring season. Families gather together to eat a big feast called a Seder and read stories from a book called the Haggadah. Yom Kippur Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 10th day of the Jewish month Tishrei, usually in September or October or during the Fall season. One very important tradition of Yom Kippur is fasting. This is when people don’t eat or drink anything for a whole day. After the day of fasting, there is a meal called “break- fast” where Challah is eaten along with many other delicious foods. Diwali Diwali is a holiday known as the Festival of Lights and is celebrated by Hindu, Sikh and Jain religions. People light their homes and streets with colourful decorations, candles, and small oil lamps. People also create beautiful patterns and designs on the floor using colourful rice, powder, and flower petals. Diwali takes place in October and November or during the Fall season. Día de los Muertos Also know as Day of the Death, this holiday is celebrated in Mexico and some other Latin American countries. Families come together to remember loved ones who have passed away by placing their photos on alters called “ofrendas”. Along with these photographs, the alters are also decorated with flowers and candles. Día de los Muertos is celebrated on October 31st to November 2nd every year or during the fall season. Hanukkah Hanukkah is a holiday celebrated by Jewish people around the world and it lasts for eight days. On each night families light one of the candles on the menorah. During Hanukkah, children play games with a spinning top called a dreidel. Hanukkah takes place in December or during the Winter season. Christmas Christmas is celebrated by many individuals from around the world and is celebrated on December 25th and or for Orthodox Christians on January 7th. Families put up a tree in their homes and decorate it with lights and ornaments. Many children often receive a gift from Santa that has been left under their tree. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is a special time for many. Kwanzaa Kwanzaa is a holiday that is celebrated by African-Americans around the world. Each night of Kwanzaa a candle on the kinara is lit to represent one of the seven principles. During Kwanzaa many celebrate through song and dance. Kwanzaa is celebrated between December 26th and January 1st or during the Winter season. Ramadan Ramadan is a special time of the year that is celebrated by Muslims around the world. It takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar. In 2025 Ramadan will take place during February and March or at the end of the Winter Season. During Ramadan, families get up to eat before the sun rises and fast until the sun sets. This is when families will gather together to enjoy a large feast. Houses are decorated with colourful lanterns called “fanoos” and many other lights.
