Atoms and Compounds By: Thomas, Lucas, Gavin What are Atoms and Compounds? The most complete form of life is an organism. All organisms are built of specialized Tissue. Tissues is made up of singular, individual cells. These cells are furtherly made up of atoms. Atoms Atoms and elements are all listed on the periodic table. On the periodic table they are organized by similarities and characteristics. Examples of this are numbers of electrons and how they react with each other. The periodic table is able to be used to determine the number of protons. Compounds A compound occurs when two or more atoms become chemically bonded together. Once an atom becomes bonded with another atom or more, it becomes one of two different types of compounds… A Covalent Bond or An Ionic Bond Ionic Bonds are seen as an inorganic compound. Covalent bonds however are seen as organic compounds. Elements An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance. The periodic table is full of 118 elements that combine to make essential things for human survival. Elements are made up of Atoms in the nucleus that have the same number of protons. Subatomic Particles A subatomic particle is a particle that is smaller than an atom. A proton is a subatomic particle with a positive charge and an electron has a negative these subatomic particles make up the atom. A neutron is a subatomic particle with no charge. (neutral) The subatomic particle decide the atomic number and the atomic mass of an element. Chemical Symbol A chemical symbol comes from an abbreviation of an element in english or most of the time they come from the latin word for the element. If the chemical symbol has two letters the second letter is always lowercase and the first letter is uppercase. The Symbol Au come from the latin word for The chemical symbol Gold Aurum Zn is short for Zinc. Chemical symbol Chemical Formula A chemical formula is the expression of different elements combining. Chemical formulas are important because they show the ingredients necessary to make important compounds. Chemical Reaction A chemical reaction is a process where substances (reactants) change into new substances (products). Chemical Reactions often involve changes that are noticeable, such as… ○ Color Changes ○ Temperature Changes ○ Change in Odor ○ A Solid Forming into a Liquid (precipitate) The Catalyst in a chemical reaction is a substance that SPEEDS UP the chemical reaction. Reactant A reactant is a substance that starts a chemical reaction (what you begin with before the reaction starts). For example, in the reaction ○ Water + Carbon Dioxide→Glucose + Oxygen Water and Carbon Dioxide are the reactants because they are the starting materials that combine to form Glucose and Oxygen. This is the chemical equation for Photosynthesis. Product The product is the substance that is made at the end of a chemical reaction. For example, in the reaction ○ Water + Carbon Dioxide→Glucose + Oxygen Glucose and Oxygen are the products because they are the ending materials that are created by the reaction This is also the chemical equation for Photosynthesis. Chemical Equation A chemical equation is a way to show what happens in a chemical reaction using symbols and formulas instead of words. Reactants are on the left side of the arrow. Products are on the right side of the arrow. The arrow shows the direction of the reaction.
