Summary
This document presents a summary of Urie Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, used in developmental psychology to explain how an individual's environment affects their development. It details the five layers: microsystems (immediate environments), mesosystems (connections between microsystems), exosystems (broader settings affecting, but not involving the individual), macrosystems (cultural norms and societal values) and chronosystems (time dimension showing change over time).

THE THEORY OF ECOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT THE MAN BEHIND THE IDEA Who is Urie Bronfrenbrenner? Urie is a Russian-born American developmental psychologist best known for his work on the ecological systems theory of human development. Which emphasized that development is influenced by different layers of environments that interact with each other. THE THEORY OF ECOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT The Theory of Ecological Development is Urie’s theory that the person’s environment affects the child’s development. Urie arranged these “layers” as your immediate environment, the interconnections of the immediate environment, the environment of the people in your immediate environment, the cultural, societal, and economic norms, and the timeframe the person is in. MICROSYSTEM This is the innermost layer, consisting of immediate environments and relationships, like family, school, peers, and work. MESOSYSTEM This level represents the interconnections between microsystems. EXOSYSTEM These are broader settings that do not directly involve the individual but still affect them MACROSYSTEM This includes larger cultural, societal, and economic systems, such as national values, laws, and customs, which can shape individual development. CHRONOSYSTEM A later addition to the theory, this system refers to the dimension of time, showing how individuals and environments change over time.
