Ms. Michelle Mae B. Maru Jean Baptiste de Lamarck - The first to propose the theory of evolution (Lamarckian evolution) Charles Darwin - His notable observation of the Species on the Galapagos Island contributed to the claims of natural selection and adaptation of organisms to become fit and not become extinct, According to the theory, individuals with traits that enable them to adapt to their environments will help them survive and have more offspring, which will inherit those traits. Individuals with less adaptive traits will less frequently survive to pass them on. Over time, the traits that enable species to survive and reproduce will become more frequent in the population and the population will change, or evolve, according to BioMed Central. Through natural selection, Darwin suggested, genetically diverse species could arise from a common ancestor. PHYLOGENETICS Is the study of Evolutionary Relationships among species. EVOLUTIONARY RELATIONSHIP - Evolutionary relationships are the relationships between two different organisms that are related through the global process of evolution. In other words, they are the relationships between two species with a common ancestor. CLASSICAL PHYLOGENETICS- Morphological similarities, such as shape of breaks, the number of legs, and other physical attributes are taken into account MODERN PHYLOGENETICS- sequences of genes across organisms are used to generate phylogenetic trees. The Study of evolution informs cont… systematics Advances in molecular phylogenetics allow us to look into the degrees of similarities and differences between organisms at the gene level, which could help establish evolutionary relationships. Today, the bulk of DNA data are handled and processed through computers using programs that are capable of comparing a set of DNA of several organisms to construct a phylogenetic tree.
