With the decline of Persian (Babylonian) supremacy, The people of Greece begin to thrive and build. People like, Plato, Socrates, Democrates and Pythagoras make HUGE advances in philosophy and science; especially mathematics and medicine. The Greeks also make huge advances in art, and soon, the best writers and sculptors in the world are all Greek. THE POLIS GREECE as we know it today was not unified in ancient times. There was NOT one place called Greece. Greece was a collection of city-states (Polis) that would only come together against a common enemy. They all shared similar cultures and spoke the same language but did not get a ALEXANDER MAGNUS Son of King Phillip II of Macedon, Alexander ascended to the Macedonian throne at the age of 20. Over the course of his short life he would wage a ten year campaign against the enemies of Macedon and conquer most of the known world. Greek language and culture would be spread to all major cities. Alexander would die by poisoning at age 32. ENDURING WORKS DEMOCRACY PLAYS PHILOSOPHY MEDICINE Greek physician Hippocrates, known as the “Father of Medicine,” has had a profound impact on the development of the medical field. His teachings are still widely studied today. GREEK Greek is the first major western language. The greatest thoughts and art of the time would be written in Greek. It became the first Lingua Franca ; since everyone wanted to trade with Greece. Greek is still spoken today although it sounds different than it did in Alexander’s time. GREEK IN ENGLISH According to one estimate, more than 150,000 words of English are derived from Greek words. Words that starts with 'ph-' are usually of Greek origin, for example: philosophy, physical, photo, phrase, philanthropy. The modern English alphabet is based on the Roman alphabet and contains many of the same letters as the ancient Greek alphabet did. Moreover, even the name alphabet shows the Greek influence, as the first two letters of the Greek alphabet are Alpha and Bet(a).  Cemetery The word cemetery seems far from Greek. However, it originates from the Greek word koimitirion, which you pronounce as kee-mee-tee-rion. This Greek word describes the place you sleep, and as death is seen as an endless sleep, the cemetery is this place.  Dynasty The word dynasty comes from the Greek word dinami which means strength or power.  Enthusiasm In ancient Greece, there was a word made up of en, (in), heós (god), and usía (essence). Enthousiasmós meant something like possed by a god or inspired by the divine. This word then went through Latin and French until it entered the English language with the meaning of excitement.  Jealous The word jealous comes from the Greek word zêlos.  Dinosaur Dinosaur comes from a combination of two Greek words. The first is dinos, meaning terrible or fearful. Saûros means lizard. Put these two together and you have the fearful creatures that used ROOTS THE DEATH OF ALEXANDER Alexander would die at age 32 after being poisoned by his cup-bearer. Leaving no male heirs, his empire is split among his generals. Chaos ensues as the Generals wage war against each other to try and claim the whole empire. THE DEATH OF ALEXANDER cont. The greatest army in the world has now fallen and there is no one King to unify Greece. This decline of Greece will pave the way for ROME to rise. Rome will borrow Greek military ideas and parts of Greek culture as they set off to conquer the known world.
