For the next ten years the holy founder was engaged in a series of struggles for the preservation of his institute, in the course of which his name was attacked, and justice denied him before the civil tribunals. 42 43  After choosing Bro. Bartolomew as his successor, John spent the remaining of his days in self-effacement, mental prayers, obedience and mortification. He died in Rouen on Good Friday, April 7, 1719.
