Chapter 1 In Chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway, the narrator, introduces himself and explains that he moved to West Egg, Long Island, in the summer of 1922 to work in the bond business. Nick describes West Egg as a place where people with "new money" live, including his neighbor, Jay Gatsby, who owns a huge mansion and is famous for hosting extravagant parties. Across the bay is East Egg, where the "old money" elite live, including Nick’s cousin Daisy Buchanan and her wealthy husband, Tom. Nick visits Daisy and Tom’s grand home in East Egg. Daisy is charming and playful, while Tom is described as strong and aggressive. During dinner, Nick meets Jordan Baker, a professional golfer and Daisy’s friend. The mood shifts when Tom receives a phone call, and it becomes clear he is having an affair. Daisy tries to hide her unhappiness but hints to Nick that her life isn’t as perfect as it seems. Later that night, when Nick returns home, he notices Gatsby standing outside. Gatsby is staring across the bay at a green light, which seems to hold special meaning for him. This mysterious moment sets up Gatsby’s deep longing and introduces a sense of mystery about his character.
