THE FENCE ENG.114 – SURVEY OF PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH FIRST SEM/AY 2024-2025 AUTHOR’S BACKGROUND JOSE GARCIA VILLA ► has won international fame as a short story writer and a poet ► his “Man Songs” caused his expulsion from Up in 1929 ► finished his BA in 1932 at the University of New Mexico ► Completed his MA at Columbia University ► Recipient of several awards like the Guggenheim Fellowship, Shelly Memorial Award for Poetry, and A Bollingen Fellowship ► Far Eastern University awarded him the degree of Doctor in Literature honoris causa in 1959. ► In June 1973 the University of the Philippines gave him its higher academic award, the Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa. ► On June 12, 1973, Mr. Villa received the National Artist Award for his literary accomplishments. SUMMARY It is story about the two neighbors, Aling Biang and Aling Sebia who became bitter enemies because of Aling Biang’s philandering husband. Aling Biang caught her husband one night in Aling Biang’s house. This has resulted to the separation of their worlds through the bamboo fence made by Aling Biang. Since then, they have not talked to each other and it changed their lives drastically and has greatly affected both their children. Aling Biang’s son, Iking, who is very sickly , is fascinated by the girl on the other side of the fence. He always listens to the little girl playing guitar. He really wants to talk to her but he could not because he is prohibited by Aling Biang. Boy Iking longs to be with the girl until one night during Christmas eve, he told her to play the guitar for him, but he was not able to hear it one last time, at 2:00 am, Boy Iking’s heart stops beating. Characterization ► Aling Biang –a woman who felt so bitter and mad about her husbands infidelity; she never forgave her husband and has caused miseries to her own son ► Aling Sebia –the other woman, Aling Biang’s neighbor; she felt the effect of her betrayal to her neighbor that cut their ties as friends ► Iking- Aling Biang’s very sickly child; he longs for friendship to the girl who lived next to their house separated by a fence. ► Aling Biang’s husband – the man who caused the bitter conflict between the two neighbors;too cowardly escaping his responsibility to both women The Conflict ► Aling Biang vs Aling Sebia ► Boy Iking vs the girl ► The Fence The theme of the story ► Betrayal ► Hatred ► Bitterness ► Selfishness Moral of the story ► Learn how to forgive other people who have caused so much pain and bitterness in your life.
