The Eye muscles 1. Medial Rectus  Location: Runs along the inside of the eye, closest to the nose.  Function: Moves the eye inward (adduction) toward the nose. 2. Lateral Rectus  Location: Runs along the outer side of the eye, closest to the temple.  Function: Moves the eye outward (abduction) away from the nose. 3. Superior Rectus  Location: Runs on top of the eye.  Function: Moves the eye upward (elevation) and slightly rotates it inward (intorsion) and toward the nose (adduction). 4. Inferior Rectus  Location: Runs along the bottom of the eye.  Function: Moves the eye downward (depression) and slightly rotates it outward (extorsion) and away from the nose (abduction). 5. Superior Oblique  Location: Runs along the top of the eye, with a tendon that passes through a pulley- like structure called the trochlea.  Function: Rotates the eye inward (intorsion), moves it downward (depression), and slightly outward (abduction). 6. Inferior Oblique  Location: Runs underneath the eye and attaches toward the outer corner.  Function: Rotates the eye outward (extorsion), moves it upward (elevation), and slightly outward (abduction).
