Tetracyclines are not for children under 8 years of age. Tetracyclines are broad spectrum antibiotics. Tetracyclines treat acne vulgaris and periodontal disease. Tetracyclines treat UTI’s, Lyme disease and anthrax. Tetracyclines treat GI infections caused by h. pylori bacteria. Tetracyclines can cause GI discomfort which includes cramping nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and esophageal ulceration. Avoid taking Tetracyclines at bedtime to reduce esophageal ulceration. Tetracyclines can cause yellow or brown tooth discoloration, or hypoplasia of tooth enamel. Tetracyclines can cause hepatotoxicity. The signs of hepatotoxicity are jaundice and lethargy. Avoid administration of daily high doses of Tetracyclines through IV. Tetracyclines can cause photosensitivity so wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Tetracyclines can cause superinfection and can lead to diarrhea, or yeast infections in the oral cavity, vagina and bowels. Tetracyclines are avoided during pregnancy as they can cause staining of teeth in infant. Avoid Tetracyclines if patient has history of kidney disease. Tetracyclines decrease the effectiveness of birth control. Use a non-hormonal form of contraceptive. Doxycycline and minocycline are safe for kidneys. Make sure that any milk products and antacids are separated at least 2 hours of Tetracyclines ingestion. Tetracyclines can be taken with food but food decreases the absorption of Tetracyclines.
