TECHNOPAINTER Teaching the skills of tomorrow… today! SESSION 1 Draw It! In this session, students become "techno" painters. They learn how to use a digital pencil, eraser, and paint bucket to create artwork. To start, they are introduced to the Paint window. Next, they experiment with basic paint tools. Students practice their skills by completing a series of challenges. Once confident with their new skills they apply their artistic talents to produce a beautiful picture. It is time to draw it! Assignment 1: Become a Painter Assignment 2: Pencil It! Assignment 3: Fill It! Assignment 4: Design It! Session 1 Review: Find It Session 1 Extension Activity: Color It TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 1 Assignment 1: Become a Painter You are going to become a painter. You will use the computer to make your pictures. I Like to Make Pictures Draw a circle around the tools that you use to make pictures. pencil eraser paint brush marker crayon scissors and glue These tools are also on the computer. You will find them in a program called Paint. TECHNOKIDS INC. 1 TECHNOPAINTER Paint has digital tools you can use to make a picture. Can you find them? Open Paint Open Paint. Circle the Paint Tools Pencil Eraser Fill with color Size Colors This is the drawing area. This is where you will make your picture. Close Paint Click the Close button. 2 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 1 Assignment 2: Pencil It Making pictures is fun when you use the computer and Paint. Try drawing with the pencil. Open Paint Open Paint. OPTIONAL: Open the blank template in the Painter folder. Select the Pencil Click the Pencil in the Tools group. Select a Color In the Colors group, click the Color 1 box. From the palette, click a color you like. Click and drag in the drawing area to draw a line. TECHNOKIDS INC. 3 TECHNOPAINTER Select a Line Size Click Size. Choose the largest line size. Click and drag to draw another line. TIP: Press the CTRL key and the + key on the number pad of the keyboard to make the line wider. Press CTRL and – to make it narrower. Pencil Drawing Challenge Can you draw with the pencil? Take the challenge! Draw a blue wavy line that looks like a wave. Draw a green wavy line that looks like a mountain. Draw an orange wavy line that looks like a snake. Close Paint Click the Close button. Click Don't Save when asked to save the changes. 4 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 1 Assignment 3: Fill It A painter needs to be able to fill areas with color. Try it! Open Paint Open Paint. OPTIONAL: Open the blank template in the Painter folder. Select the Pencil Click Pencil. Select a Color In the Colors group, click the Color 1 box. From the palette, click a color you like. Select a Line Size Click Size. Choose the largest line size. TECHNOKIDS INC. 5 TECHNOPAINTER Use the Pencil to Make a Sun Click and drag to draw a circle. THE SHAPE MUST BE CLOSED. THERE CAN BE NO GAPS! TIP: The ends must meet to close the shape so that it will not "leak" when filled with color. Fill the Sun with Color Click Fill with color. Pick yellow. Click inside the circle. 6 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 1 How to Fix a Mistake (Optional) If the color went all over the canvas, this means the shape was not closed. You need to fix it! Undo the Last Action Click Undo on the Quick Access Toolbar. Zoom In! Click Zoom In at the bottom of the screen. Fix the Hole Look for the gap in the shape. Click Pencil. Choose the color of the circle. Click and drag to join the two ends together. Click Fill with color. Choose the color yellow. Click inside the shape to fill it. Zoom Out! Click Zoom Out at the bottom of the screen. TECHNOKIDS INC. 7 TECHNOPAINTER Draw Sun Rays Click Pencil. Choose a color. Click and drag to draw sun rays. Erase a Mistake Click Eraser. Click Size. Pick a tool size. Click and drag the mouse to erase a mistake. Fill with Color Drawing Challenge Can you fill with color? Take the challenge! Draw a heart. Fill it with red. Draw a ball. Fill it with blue. Close Paint Click the Close button. Click Don't Save when asked to save the changes. 8 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 1 Assignment 4: Design It Use the Pencil to make a coloring book page. Color the picture using the Fill with color tool. Open Paint Open Paint. OPTIONAL: Open the blank template in the Painter folder. Select the Pencil Click Pencil. Draw a Coloring Book Picture In the Colors group, click the Color 1 box. From the palette, click black. Click Size. Pick a tool size. Click and drag to draw a picture. TIP: Make the lines touch! You cannot fill a shape that has a gap. TECHNOKIDS INC. 9 TECHNOPAINTER Coloring Book Challenge Trade places with someone in your class. Use Fill with color to color in their picture. Close Paint Click the Close button. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 1 Session 1 Extension Activity: Color It The Coloring Pages folder has pictures you can paint. Use Fill with color to color in the picture. 1. Open Paint. 2. Click the Paint Button or File tab. 3. Click Open. 4. Go to the Painter folder. 5. Double click the Coloring Pages folder to open it. 6. Click the More options arrow on the Change your View button. Click Large Icons. 7. Double click on a picture you want to color. 8. Use Fill with color to paint the picture. 9. Close Paint. TIP: If the default program for png files is set to Paint, go to the Painter folder. Double click Coloring Pages. Double click on a picture to open the file in Paint. TECHNOKIDS INC. 13 TECHNOPAINTER 14 TECHNOKIDS INC. SESSION 2 Type It! In this session, students type it! To develop basic keyboarding skills they use a worksheet to identify common keys. Next, students use the keyboard to type letters into a text box and format the letters. Once familiar with the location and function of keys, they type their name and make it look fancy. Upon completion, they print their work. Words are everywhere! Today, people use computers to write all kinds of things. Before you can type your name on your picture you need to learn about the keyboard. What Do Keyboards Do? Keyboards are used to type. You might use a keyboard to type a story, to enter numbers, or to give the computer orders. Computer keyboards are made up of many keys. Keys are the little buttons that your fingers press. Each letter in the alphabet has its own key. There are even keys for numbers, symbols, and other commands. What Does the Key Do? Below are a few of the important keys that you need to type your name on your art work. LETTER keys. Press a letter key to form words on the page. Make a space. This puts a blank space between words so that you can read them. Makes a CAPITAL LETTER when a letter key and the SHIFT key are pressed at the same time. Names start with capital letters. Remove a letter by moving the cursor backwards. TECHNOKIDS INC. 17 18 Color the Keyboard TECHNOPAINTER Color the LETTER keys used to type your name orange. Color the SPACEBAR key blue. Color the SHIFT keys green. Can you find the Color the BACKSPACE key yellow. keyboard keys? TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 2 Assignment 6: Try It Let's try out the keyboard. Use the LETTER keys, the SHIFT key and the SPACEBAR to see what happens. Open Paint Open Paint. OPTIONAL: Open the blank template in the Painter folder. Make a Text Box Click Text in the Tools group. Click the mouse on the canvas to make a text box. The Text Tools tab appears in the Ribbon. TIP: DO NOT click outside of the text box at any time. If you do, you can no longer make changes to the text. TECHNOKIDS INC. 19 TECHNOPAINTER Type Using the Keyboard Press the LETTER keys on the keyboard to type letters. TIP: The letters on the keyboard are CAPITAL LETTERS but when you press them they make lowercase letters. Press the SPACEBAR to make a space. Type a capital letter. Press and hold the SHIFT key and press the letter B. + Let go of the SHIFT key. Press the letter B. It is lower case. Press the SPACEBAR and type a few more letters. Remove Letters with the Backspace Key Press the BACKSPACE key. - With each press of the key a letter that was typed is taken away. 20 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 2 Select the Text Before you can make any changes to text it needs to be selected. This lets the computer know what you want to change. Press the left mouse button three times inside the text box. - All the text will be selected, or highlighted. Change the Font The font is the shape of the letters. Look through the list of fonts and pick one you like. Click the Font arrow in the Font group of the Text tab. Move the mouse pointer down the list of fonts. The letters in the text box will change. Click on a font name to apply it to the letters. TECHNOKIDS INC. 21 TECHNOPAINTER Change the Font Size The font size is the size of the letters. They can be super small or really big. With the letters still selected change the letter size. With the letters still selected, click the Font Size arrow in the Font group. Move the mouse pointer down the list of sizes. The letters change size. Click on a size you like. You may notice that the letters in the text box get cut off if you choose a font size that is too large. This is easy to fix. Just move the mouse pointer over one of the sizing handles. When you see the two-way arrow, click and drag to make the box larger. 22 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 2 Picking a Style Font style is an effect you can add to the letters. Letters can be dark, lean to the right, underlined, or crossed out. Add each of the styles to see how they look. With the letters still selected, click Bold in the Font group to make the letters dark. - The tool turns orange to show the style is ON. Click Bold again to turn it OFF. Click Italic to make the letters lean to the right. Click Italic again to turn it OFF. Click Underline to put a line below the letters. Click Italic again to turn it OFF. Click Strikethrough style to cross out the letters. Click Strikethrough again to turn it OFF. Apply the styles that you like. TECHNOKIDS INC. 23 TECHNOPAINTER Change the Font Color Font Color is the color of the letters. Pick a color! With the letters selected, click Color 1 in the Colors group. Hold the mouse over a color square to see what the text will look like with that color. Click on a color you like. Move the Text Box You can move the text box to another place on the page. Move the mouse pointer over the dotted line around the text box. When the mouse pointer changes to a four way arrow click and drag to move the text box. Deselect the Text When you are all done editing the text, click outside of the text box. The text is now stuck on the page and is part of the picture. Close Paint Click the Close button. Click Don't Save when asked to save the changes. 24 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 2 Assignment 7: Name and Print It Have fun with the keyboard and your name. Make a page that shows your name in different fonts and colors and then print the page. Find the Letters in Your Name Can you find the letters in your name? Open Paint Open Paint. OPTIONAL: Open the blank template in the Painter folder. Type Your Name Click Text in the Tools group. Click on the canvas to make a text box. Press and hold the SHIFT key and press the first letter of your name. Let go of the SHIFT key. Type the rest of the letters in your name. TECHNOKIDS INC. 25 TECHNOPAINTER Format Your Name Click the mouse three times inside the text box to select the letters in your name. Click the Font arrow and choose a font. Click the Font Size arrow and choose a size. Pick a style that you like. Pick a color that you like. Move the text box if you want to put it on another part of the page. Click outside of the text box to make it part of the picture. Type More Names Click the mouse on another part of the page. Type your name again. Format your name so it looks different than the first one. Repeat until your name is on the page four times. 26 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 2 Print Your Name Click the Paint button or File tab. Point to Print and select Print Preview. Check to make sure that your words all fit on one page. If you can see the If you cannot see the entire page entire page you can print. you need to fix the page setup. If are ready to print, click Print. Choose a printer from the Print dialog box and click Print. If you need to fix the page setup, click Page Setup. Select Landscape and Fit to 1 by 1 page(s). Click OK. Click Print. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 2 Session 2 Review: Check It What tool should you use? 1. You need a tool to type your name. 2 You want to change the font. 3. You want to make the letters bigger. 4. You want to put a line under the letters. TECHNOKIDS INC. 29 30 Can you Find the Keys? TECHNOPAINTER 1. Put a checkmark (✓) on the key that puts a space between the words. 2. Put an X on the key that makes a CAPITAL LETTER. 3. Circle (O) the key that removes letters. TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 2 Session 2 Extension Activity: Write It Write a color word. Format it to make it look like that color. 1. Open Paint. 2 Select Text and make a text box on the page. 3. Type the name of a color. black orange blue purple brown red green white grey yellow 4. Now, change the text so that it looks like its color. 5. Be sure to add your name to the page. 6. Print your picture. 7. Close Paint. Do not save the changes. TECHNOKIDS INC. 31 TECHNOPAINTER 32 TECHNOKIDS INC. SESSION 3 Paint It! In this session, students paint it! To start they experiment with the different types of brushes. From a regular paint brush, to calligraphy pens, crayons, and markers, students gain confidence with using digital art tools to create a beautiful rainbow of colors. Next, they apply their skills to paint a happy picture that includes a big smile. Assignment 8: Brush It! Assignment 9: Rainbow It! Assignment 10: Smile It! Session 3 Skill Review: Finish It Session 3 Extension Activity: Magnify It TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 3 Assignment 8: Brush It! Have fun with the paint brush! Open Paint Open Paint. OPTIONAL: Open the blank template in the Painter folder. Paint with a Brush Click the Brushes arrow. Click to select the first brush in the gallery. Click Size and pick a width. In the Colors group, click the Color 1 box. From the palette, click a color you like. Click and drag to draw a line. TECHNOKIDS INC. 35 TECHNOPAINTER Paint Brush Challenge Try each of the paint brushes to find the one you like the best? Take the challenge! Use your skills to try EACH style of paint brush. Circle the one you like the BEST! Did you notice that the digital brushes work like real tools? If you click and drag over the same spot in the drawing area with the crayon brush the texture becomes darker just like if you were using a real crayon in a coloring book. Close Paint Click the Close button. Click Don't Save when asked to save the changes. 36 TECHNOKIDS INC. TECHNOPAINTER SESSION 3 Assignment 9: Rainbow It! Can you paint a rainbow? TECHNOKIDS INC. 73 TECHNOPAINTER Saving Tips If you do not save your work, you will LOSE IT. When you close the program the file is gone. Every file that you save must have a DIFFERENT NAME. If you use the same name, it will erase your first picture and replace it with the one you just saved. You must save your work in your OWN FOLDER. This will make it easy for you to find the file when you want to reopen it. Save OFTEN. While you are making your picture, you can click the Save button over and over again. This will stop you from losing your work if the computer breaks. You only need to name the file ONE TIME. Once you click Save and give the file a name you do not need to do that step again. Instead, each time you click Save the latest changes are updated to the file. Give your file a NAME that makes sense. If you name the file art, when you go to reopen the file, you will remember the file. If you name the file sgdrft, you will have no clue what the picture is about. Questions about Saving your Work 1.
