MODULE : 5 TALENT IDENTIFICATION & SELECTION Faculty Name : Gunadhar Mandal Sr.SAI Football Coach TALENT IDENTIFICATION Talent identification and development has become an important area of research in sports. In performance sports only persons who have talent can have a chance excel in international arena. Talent alone does not give guarantee for winning medal it has to be coupled with hard and rigorous training spread over several years for achievement of maximum performance. WHAT IS TALENT Sports talent is the sum of pre-requisites possessed by the person which will enable him to achieve high performance in a sports in future. The pre-requisite includes motor abilities , technical skill, tactical efficiency , physique , personality traits , motives ,interests etc. Sports talent is a product of “ Heredity and Environment “. The inherent qualities which a persons get through genetics has to developed through scientific and systematics training along with required sports environment to achieve maximum performance. Talent identification is process which helps to find out various performance pre-requisites possessed by a person through various means and methods which ultimately determine the future performance. PRINCIPLES OF TALENT INDENTIFICATION AND DEVELOPMENT Several sports science discipline are actively engaged in tackling the problem of talent identification and it’s development. No clear cut formula is available for the talent identification. Based on present knowledge gained from actual practice and sports science discipline the following principles of talent identification and development are prescribe below. Principles : Starting point is the structure of future performance Look those performance capacity which will enable the sportsman to achieve high performance. Demand profile for football serve as a base for talent identification. It is a long term training process. A continuous and systematic search to be continued in all three stages of long term training process i.e. Basic , advance and High performance stages A wide range of factors must be considered. Apart from the main performance factors some of the other important factors to be considered such as i. Age (Chronological & biological.) ii. Training state iii. Duration of the training in the past. iv. Motivation, interest and attitude of the child and his parents. v. Health vi. Socio-economical and living background. It should become progressively more specific. Less trainable factors should be given more weightage. Speed, Height temperament etc. Talent indicators should be considered. i. Rate of increase of performance. ii. Performance stability. iii. Increase performance in a series of competition. iv. Ability to tolerate load. Large population of children is basic necessity. Cover wider population. PROBABLE MOTOR ABILITY TEST FOR TALENT IDENTIFICATION Test No-1 : 30 Meters Flying Start Purpose :To measure the maximum speed Equipment's :Electronics Stop Watch, Flag Poles (Six), Measuring Tape and 45 meter running course or strip. The running strip should be firm and non-slippery Marking :The distance of 45 meter is divided into two zones of 15 meters and 30 meters as shown in the Diagram below. 1. That is DE (15 m) and EF (30 m), Take radius of 30 meters and mark an Arc From point E. Mark another arc of 30 meters from point F and intersecting at point C. Join CE and extend to A and join CF and extend to B. Fix Flags at all these seven points. Procedure: The Athlete stands behind the line D and on signal accelerates and crosses the line E with Extreme possible speed and also crosses the line F with same speed. Athlete are not permitted To run with spikes. Scoring: The time keeper stands on point C and when the Athlete reaches in the line with flags A-A And E line he starts the watch and when the torso of the Athlete comes in the line B-B and Cross F stops the watch. The time is then recorded from the watch. Time taken by the Athlete From the start and finish is his/her score. Test No -2 : Vertical Jump Aim : To asses the explosive leg power and jumping ability. Equipment : Duster , Chalk Powder ,Measuring tape , a chair & bench Marking : A vertical wall is prominently mark in centimeters up to 3.25 mtrs. Procedure : The performer dips his/her finger in chalk powder and stands side wise , against the wall/ keeping the arm raised completely above the head and clap of the extended mark marked with chalk on finger straight. Then he jumps as high up as possible and touch the wall. The reading shall be noted by keeping eyes in level with the chalk mark on the graduated marking. Scoring : The standing reach is subtracted from the jumping reach. The score will be best of three jumps. Test NO-3 : 6 X 10 METERS SHUTTLE RUN Purpose: To determine the agility of an Athlete Equipment's : Stop watch, lime powder and a running course of at least 10 meters. Surface of the course should be non-slippery. Marking: 10 meters of distance is marked by two parallel lines of 5 meters each as shown in diagram. Procedure :The Athlete stand behind the starting line. On the command of starting signal “GO“ Athlete runs faster, goes nearest to the other line and touches it with one hand, turns and comes back to starting line, touches it with hand, turns and repeat it for a total 5 times and 6th time runs over the line as fast as possible. Scoring: Time taken by Athlete to complete the course of 6 X 10 meters will be his/her score Test NO-4 : 800 METERS RUN Purpose of the Test : To measure the endurance capacity Equipment's/Facilities : 400 meters track, Stop watch, whistle Marking: The 400 meters distance is marked on the field or a marked 400 meters track can be used where curve start is to be given. Procedure: The Athlete stands behind the starting line. On the starting signal Athlete runs 800 meters distance i.e. 2 rounds of 400 meter track Scoring: The time taken by Athlete to cover 800 meters distance is his/her score. Test No -5: Ball throw Name of the test : Medicine ball Throw (1kg) Aim of the test :To measure back and explosive strength of the upper body. Equipment's and material :Medicine ball, measuring tape, marking a circle like shot put. Procedure: The subject sits in the centre of the one-meter diameter’s circle with his/her legs stretched forward comfortably. Legs should also be securely apart and spine should be in line with the centre of the circle as shown in fig. From this positing subject throws the ball up and forward as far as possible with both the hands over the head. Three attempts are permitted. Scoring : The score shall be best of the three throws where a horizontal distance shall be measured from the centre of the circle in centimeters. Medicine ball throw NORMS Note : 1,2&3 means points Fatigue index = last sprint-fastest sprint /fastest sprint X 100 % Football game Specific test Test Number: 1 Aim : To evaluate the coordination and speed with ball Material: Stop watch, measuring tape, 11 markers and a pen Description: The markers are placed as shown in the figure above. The player starts with one foot on the starting line. The test leader counts down three, two one ,”Go” ,then the players starts and is dribbling as indicated in the figure. If cones are used , the test is not valid if the player step over a cone instead of around it, The test result is the time to complete the test. The time is recorded in seconds to nearest two decimals. Test number -2 Aim : To evaluate the sprinting and coordination ability when dribbling the ball Material : Stop watch, measuring tape, 12 markers (height preferably >1.5 meters) and a pen. Description : The players starts in the middle of the starting zone (at the penalty spot : point 1) with the back to the test course, a ball is passed to the players from a distance of two meters and when the player has returned the ball , the players turn around and sprint to the point 2. If the stop watch is used, it is started when the player touches the ball passed to him/her or when the starter say “Go” and is stopped when the ball passes the goal line. Test Number -3 Kicking for accuracy Aim : To evaluate players accuracy in kicking Material : Flag post -2/rope , ball -4 nos. and score sheet. Description : The goal post is divided into three equal parts namely right part , left part and middle. The player should kick the ball from penalty spot , starting with any sequence either right, middle left or left middle right with appropriate force. After signal “Go” the player kick the ball in the air two kick either right or left and followed by one kick in the middle. In this way total 10 kicks to be taken one after another from a stationary ball. Scoring : If the ball passes in the air to the target either of part decided it will be counted correct kick if ball travel on the ground it will be invalid kick , NORMS years 3 points 2points 1 points (Correct (Correct (Correct Kicks) Kicks) Kicks) 10 years 6 5 4 11 years 7 6 5 12 years 8 7 6 13& 14 9 8 7 years Test Number – 4 Juggling Aim : To evaluate the ball control and coordination Material : Ball , Pen and paper Description /procedure: On signal “Start” player should juggle the ball by any part of the body excepts hand until and unless ball falls on ground.
