Data can be extracted from a database(s) and summarised in a spreadsheet or table. Some examples of databases are the UK Census, birth-death rates within Europe and even the register taken at the beginning of this lesson. Can you think of any other examples? Answer the following questions by using the information in the table: a) What is the capital of Austria? b) Which country had the highest proportion of its population at risk of poverty? c) Which countries had a life expectancy of above 83? d) Which country had the lowest divorce rate per 1000 people? e) Work out which country has the greatest difference between its marriage rate and divorce rate. Two-way Tables Two-way tables show information from two categories. Totals from both categories are also included in a two-way table as well as the total number of data values. Remember, data that has two variables is called bivariate data. Two-way Tables-Example This table shows the results of a survey of houses on an estate. Complete the table. Questions 3 to 7. Answers on page 390. Two-way Tables Exam Question The table below shows the number of road accident casualties in thousands. The accidents were in Northern Ireland in the years 1986 to 2000 and all involved illegal levels of alcohol. Two-way Tables Exam Question a) Write the number of total casualties in 1989, in thousands. (1 mark) b) The total number of casualties in 1996, found by adding together the Fatal, Serious and Slight injuries columns comes to 17.66 thousand. The number of casualties in the total casualties column is 17.67 thousand. Given a reason for this difference. (1 mark) c) Describe the trend in the total number of fatal casualties in the years: i) 1986 to 1991. (1 mark) ii) 1993 to 2000. (1 mark) Two-way Tables Exam Question a) 22.81 thousand or 22,810 (1 mark). b) There may have been rounding errors when collecting the data (1 mark). c) i) Total numbers are dropping/decreasing/going down (1 mark). ii) Total numbers are similar/staying level/not changing drastically (1 mark).
