Additional topics such as sequences, series, probability, conics, and inverses may be included. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of properties of functions, including domain and range, operations, compositions, inverses and piecewise defined functions. 2. Apply graphing techniques. 3. Recognize, solve and apply systems of linear equations using matrices. 4. Solve other types of inequalities such as absolute value, polynomial, and rational inequalities. 5. Recognize, graph and apply polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, logarithmic and absolute value functions and solve related equations. 6. Evaluate all roots of higher degree polynomial and rational functions. Core Objectives: 1. Calculators may be cleared before tests. In-Class Requirements: 1. A binder or spiral for lectures and in-class assignments. If preferred, students may use a digital binder or folder. Netiquette Statement Netiquette is a term used to describe the acceptable way of communicating electronically. Here are some basic rules we need to follow when communicating by email, text, and online class discussions. This is a short list but a good starting point. 1. Make sure you identify yourself clearly in all communications. 2. Use the subject line to clearly identify the subject of the message. 3. Avoid using all capital letters in your electronic message. This is equivalent to shouting in the online environment. 4. Respect other people’s time and privacy. 5. Always remember to spell check, when available Grade Determination Course Assessments Your grade will be determined by the following course requirements: Exams: There will be four-unit exams and a comprehensive final exam. Detailed explanations regarding each exam will be provided before each exam. All exams will be completed In-Person. You will have 80 minutes to complete each exam. You are permitted to use a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator on the exam. Cell phone applications are NOT allowed. (Please keep all electronic devices silent in your backpack. Any electronic device that makes noise during an exam will result in the loss of 5 points on that test.) You may write on the exam. If you need scratch paper, please ask and I will provide you with some. Homework: The key to success in mathematics classes is practice. Homework assignments will be assigned from the textbook during class time. Homework will be submitted on D2L on the appropriate due date by 11:59pm. Details of the homework assignments given in class will NOT be posted in D2L. You MUST come to class! You are responsible for the homework assignments even if you miss class In-Class Assignment: In-class assignments include (but not limited to) stations, scavenger hunts, quizzes, exit tickets, and board work. These will be done in class. You must submit your work before the end of class (11:20am CST) for a grade. If an item is not received before the class ends, the student will receive a grade zero. Final Exam: : The final exam will be comprehensive and therefore cover all concepts studied in Chapters. The final exam will be given in class on Monday May 5 (8 am – 09:50 am). There will be no make-up exam if the final exam is missed. Each EXAM is worth 10%. *Your final exam will replace any low scored Unit Exam Final Exam There is a cumulative Final Exam at the 20% end of the course covering the main content of each of the 7 chapters Total 100% Final Examinations: A final evaluation activity will occur during the last two days of the semester. The appropriate dean must approve any variation to this schedule. Letter Grade Assignment Letter Grade Final Average in Percent 90-100 A 80-89 B 70-79 C 60-69 D 59 or lower F Special Notes Regarding Final Grades There will be grades that are dropped or replaced in this class. Details regarding these assignments will be provided in D2L as the class progresses. Borderline grades will be rounded to the nearest letter grade, i.e., 89.5 is an “A” or a 59.6 would be a “D”. Late Work & Make Up Assessments 1. In- Class Assignments: There will be no make-up for in-class assignments. 2. Exams: Students will be allowed to make-up only one unit exam (Exams 1 – 4). If one exam is missed, the student is required to request a make-up exam within 48 hours by email. At that time, a make-up date will be assigned. If a request is not received within 48 hours, a zero will be assigned. If two or more exams are missed, zeros will be given for those exams. There will be no make-up for the Final Exam. 3. Homework: The grade for homework assignments given from the textbook will be lowered by half (50%) if your homework is late. Plagiarism, whether intentional or unintentional, is a serious offense in all disciplines (e.g., Math, Science, History, Government, etc.) and can be grounds for corrective actions that may include: failing the assignment for which the plagiarism was committed failing the course being dropped from the course and/or expelled from the college Deliberate acts of plagiarism exist when a student: borrows previously written work from someone uses a paper he/she has previously written for another class seeks assistance from others without the instructor’s permission buys or takes a previously written paper from someone else, or uses a source without appropriate documentation uses computer software such as PhotoMath or Mathway to solve assigned math problems Once an assignment and proper citation has been explained, it is the student’s responsibility to: document direct quoted material properly document summarized or paraphrased material properly document reproduced images properly include in-text citations include a citation page Attendance Federal Legislation requires Lone Star College to verify attendance for students who receive financial aid each semester. Academically related activities do NOT include activities where a student may be present, but not academically engaged, such as logging into an online class without active participation, participating in academic counseling or advisement, living in institutional housing, or participating in the school’s meal plan. In a distance education context, logging into an online class is not sufficient by itself to demonstrate academic attendance by the student. Withdrawal Withdrawal from the course after the official day of record and prior to the “W” Policy Day will result in a final grade of “W” on your transcript. You are strongly encouraged to meet with your professor prior to withdrawing from a course to consider all options. No credit will be awarded for a course earning a “W.” If you stop attending class, you must withdraw at the registration office prior to “W” day. If you stop attending class and do not officially withdraw by Tuesday, April 1, 2025, you will receive whatever grade is calculated based on your completion rate, which could result in an “F” for the course. Six Drop Rule Students who enrolled in Texas public institutions of higher education as first-time college students during the Fall 2007 term or later are subject to section 51.907 of the Texas Education Code, which states that an institution of higher education may not permit a student to drop (withdraw with a grade of “W”) from more than six courses, including courses that a transfer student has previously dropped at other Texas public institutions of higher education that have already been counted against their six drop limit (links to Lone Star College Course Drops Page). Students should fully understand this drop limit before they drop any course. Please see a Counselor or Advisor in our Student Services area for additional information and assistance. Dropping a developmental and/or ESOL course does not count against the six drop limit. Violation of conduct policies can result disciplinary action, up to and including suspension. Course Withdrawal & Undergraduate students enrolling as first-time in college students at a public Six Course Drop Limit institution of higher education in Texas will be limited to a total of six dropped courses during their entire undergraduate career. Lone Star College uses the term “withdrawal” to refer to a dropped course. Withdrawals occur between the official day of record (ODR) and the posted withdrawal “W” day for the course. Withdrawing from a course will result in a grade of “W” on the official transcript. Drops/withdrawals prior to the official date are not considered "dropped" courses and are not posted on the transcript. No credit will be awarded for a course earning a “W.” It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw prior to the course’s “W” date. Lack of attendance does not constitute as a withdrawal. Course Evaluation Course evaluations are the students’ opportunity to provide feedback about their experience in the course. The evaluation questionnaire can be accessed through “Links” under the Student menu in MyLonestar. Academic Appeals An academic appeal is a formal request brought by a student to change a grade or to challenge a penalty imposed for violation of standards of academic integrity. A request to change a grade or to challenge a penalty must be made within twelve months of the action. Detailed information can be found on the College’s Academic Complaint and Appeal Process page. Family Educational The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that Rights and Privacy Act protects the privacy of student education records. Under FERPA, records may (FERPA) not be released without consent of the student. Additionally, Lone Star College is permitted to release certain “directory information” without student consent. Title IX Title IX is Federal legislation that helps protect individuals from discrimination, including but not limited to, acts of harassment and violence, based on sex in education programs or activities. Lone Star College strives to create and provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students following the guidelines under Title IX. The LSC Police Department provides information and resources related to the College’s safety and emergency procedures. Campus Carry Lone Star College has established rules and regulations regarding enforcement of the Texas “Campus Carry” law. LSC prohibits concealed carry in some areas of LSC campuses, known as exclusion zones. Detailed information can be found on the LSC Campus Carry page. Early Alert Intervention A professor may submit a Student/Mentee ALERT for any student if the professor believes a student needs additional motivation to achieve academic success. Forms may be submitted for both personal or academic reasons including (but not limited to) fluctuations in attendance, sudden changes in behavior, low scores, plagiarism, violation of class or campus rules, and more. Such intervention is not meant to harass, but to ensure academic success. Computer Virus Computer viruses are, unfortunately, a fact of life. Using flash drives on more Protection than one computer creates the possibility of infecting additional computers and flash drives with computer viruses. This exposes college computers, personal computers, and any other computers to potentially damaging viruses. The college has aggressive anti-virus procedures in place to protect its computers but cannot guarantee that a virus might not temporarily infect one of its machines. It is your responsibility to protect all computers under your control and use and ensure that each flash drive you use, wherever you use it, has been scanned with anti-virus software. Internet and E-mail LSCS provides computing and network resources. You are encouraged to use the computers, software packages, and electronic mail (e-mail) for educational or System-related activities and to facilitate the efficient exchange of useful information. The equipment, software, and network capacities provided through the district computer services are the property of the System. Use of the equipment and networks is to comport with the policies and procedures of the System and access may be denied to any student who fails to comply with the System’s policies and procedures regarding its use. Access to the System’s e-mail and similar electronic communications systems are a privilege, and certain responsibilities accompany that privilege. All users are expected to demonstrate the same level of ethical and professional manner as is required in face-to-face or written communications. Threatening, anonymous, or forged messages will be treated as a violation of this policy. Software Piracy Law strictly prohibits unauthorized copying of software purchased by Lone Star College-Houston North for use in laboratories. Lone Star College-Houston North administration will take appropriate disciplinary action against anyone violating copyright laws.
