LESSON 4 HUMAN PERSON FLOURISHING & TECHNOLOGY AS A WAY OF REVEALING TECHNOLOGY derived from the Greek words Techne- art, skills, or the way logos- study of The application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life.. WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? HOW TO LIVE A FLOURISHING LIFE? Ancient Greek philosophers were some of the first thinkers who tried to answer the question Two of the most prominent ancient Greek philosophers were PLATO and ARISTOTLE WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? For PLATO and ARISTOTLE, happiness is the result of EUDAIMONIA or HUMAN FLOURISHING. EUDAIMONIA is usually equated with HAPPINESS WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? According to Plato, a human being can develop virtue by: 1. By examining things and thinking more Plato believed that a human being who does not examine his or her life surroundings will not flourish. He said that humans can reason and must use it to become wiser in order to flourish. WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? 2. By masterly using reason Plato believed that a human is good if he or she uses his or her reason over his desires. WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? 3. By living the four cardinal virtues Plato believed that are four cardinal virtues: Wisdom Courage Temperance Justice WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? For the virtue of wisdom, one must pursue learning that is based on curiosity. This would lead to more efficacy and self-mastery which are needed to have a fulfilling life. Courage is important in a just society because justice needs courageous individuals to stand for what is wrong and what is right and to correct what is wrong. Courage is also needed to face life’s challenges. Temperance or self-restraint is important in society because it prevents corruption and chaos. (vices and violence) WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? ARISTOTLE (384-322 B.C) He argued that eudaimonia or human flourishing is the highest good of human beings. Human nature, according to him, has four aspects: physical, emotional, social, and rational. WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? 1. Humans are physical beings. As physical beings, humans need air, water, food, rest, and exercise to keep the body functioning. 2. Humans are emotional beings. Like other animals, humans have urges, wants, desire and reactions. Humans have emotional needs too. WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? 3. Humans are social beings As social beings, it is inherent that humans need friendship, cooperation, and a sense of belongingness in society. 4. Humans are rational beings. Rationality is what differentiates humans from other animals. Rationality allows human to express, be creative, or obey reason. WHAT IS HUMAN FLOURISHING? When an individual possesses intellectual virtues and virtues of character, then, he will attain eudaimonia or human flourishing. TECHNOLOGY The Human AS A WAY 01 Condition Before Common Era OF The Human REVEALING 02 Condition in the Common Era 03 The Essence of Technology 01 The Human Condition Before Common Era The Human Condition Before Common Era ❑ Homo erectus have been using fire to cook, all the while without realizing the laws of friction and heat. ❑ Tools from stone and flints marked the era of the Stone Age, during the advent of our very own Homo sapiens. ❑ People discovered minerals and began forging metalwork. The Human Condition Before ❑ Fur Common Era clothing and animal skin are primarily used for comfort against harsh winds. They begin to cover themselves up out of necessity. ❑ People of the time had also painstakingly wrought and hewed said figures in honor of some deity; initial roster of primitive gods includes objects they encounter through their day-to-day lives. 02 The Human Condition in the Common Era The Human Condition in the Common Era ❑ Driven by their primal need to survive, humans were quick to find ways to drive off other megafaunas threatening a prospective hunting spot. ❑ The ongoing extinction of several species—both flora and fauna—due to human activity The Human Condition in the Common Era ❑ They began to hunt, farm, and produce things with prospect of profit. ❑ When they could not sell products, they used their skills and got compensated for it—bringing forth a specialized group of artisans. ❑ Physical strength was valued at most, although there appeared to be as many intellectually gifted figures just the same. 03 The Essence of Technology The Essence of Technology ❑ Modern humans are reliant on technology in their search for the good life. Humans are reduced into the amount of productivity they are able to render during their lifetime. ❑ By too much reliance on technology, humans lose track of things that matter, reducing their surroundings to their economic value. The Essence of Technology ❑ Technology can either be perceived as first, a means to achieve man’s end and second, that which constitutes human activity. ❑ The second perspective paints technology in such a way that each period reveals a particular character regarding man’s being. TECHNOLOGICAL VIEW OF THE WORLD BY MARTIN HEIDEGGER TECHNOLOGICAL VIEW OF THE WORLD BY MARTIN HEIDEGGER TECHNOLOGICAL VIEW OF THE WORLD BY MARTIN HEIDEGGER TECHNOLOGICAL VIEW OF THE WORLD BY MARTIN HEIDEGGER TECHNOLOGICAL VIEW OF THE WORLD BY MARTIN HEIDEGGER SUMMARY ❑ Science and technology has been part of human activity since the beginning of our species. ❑ It has aided us in survival and helped us outsmart our adversaries. ❑ However, it also leads us to a paradox in which we are only able to see the world in the lenses of technological innovations. ❑ Advancements in the field expose us to previously unknown predicaments, effectively helping us to reveal our own natures and enforcing one perspective in finding the truth.
