# Juanito's Story ## Episode 1: I hate school - Juanito hates school, he doesn't do his homework, and doesn't want to go back to class. - Juanito lives in Veracruz, a commercial seaport located in the heart of the Gulf of Mexico. - His family lives in a little house by the shores of the Jamapa River, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico. - Their house has three rooms and a backyard with mango, papaya and banana trees. - A colorful hammock hangs between two palm trees. - After school, Juanito returns home and spends time in his backyard by the river. - Juanito spends hours swinging in the hammocks, eating mangoes and sipping coconut water. ## Episode 2: Juanito's family - Juanito's parents, Doña Amparo and Don Luis, are a loving couple who have been married for twelve years. - Don Luis is a fisherman, and Doña Amparo is a waitress at the traditional Café la Parroquia in downtown Veracruz. - Juanito is ten years old, and has two pets:: *Lázaro*, a former stray dog that Juanito rescued from the street, and *Chela*, his cat. - Lázaro loves tacos, swimming and splashing in the Jamapa River. - Chela is a fat cat who loves to sleep. - Juanito's room is beautifully decorated with shells, sea glass, and driftwood figures that his dad carves for him. - Carving is one of Don Luis' hobbies; he has made magnificent sea urchins, tweezers, starfish, seahorses, and even a little soccer ball. ## Episode 3: Juanito's friends - Juanito loves playing with his slingshot and tossing rocks into the river. - He loves playing soccer with his friends, José ("Pepe") and Ramón (“Mon”). - Juanito and his family are very good friends with Pepe's family. - Pepe's dad, Don José, is a fisherman, and his wife, Doña Lupita, works at the bakery, La Conchita. - Juanito is mostly lazy, untidy, and disorganized. Pepe is organized and tidy to the point of perfection. - Pepe has been awarded Student of the Year for three years running. ## Episode 4: Juanito's passion - Juanito and Pepe share a passion for soccer. - Pepe invited Juanito to celebrate his birthday party in Alvarado. - They usually play soccer after church on Sundays. - Pepe will be getting a professional soccer ball and a new Tiburones Rojos (Red Sharks) soccer jersey, signed by the team captain. ## Episode 5: Juanito's jealousy - Juanito is envious of Pepe new soccer ball and jersey. - Don Luis has told Juanito that he needs to work hard to deserve such things and focus on his schoolwork. - Every Sunday, families from Boca del Río go to church and then to Alvarado to catch róbalo (snook), a native fish from the region. - Alvarado is a picturesque port near Veracruz, unique for its mangroves and its brackish mix of fresh and salt water. - After catching róbalo, both families usually made a bonfire on the beach to cook the delicious fresh fish. - It was also a ritual for the kids to dive under the fishing boats to tear away the algae stuck to the hull before the dazzling sunset. - The kids loved a good soccer game in the sand, and diving and splashing in those tranquil waters before a delicious dinner of róbalo. ## Episode 6: The stolen Jersey - Juanito couldn't hide his jealousy and told Pepe that the jersey doesn't fit him. - Pepe ignored Juanito's comments. - Juanito ran off to his dad's boat and told him to take care of Pepe's Jersey. - Don José and Don Luis sailed out in their boats to catch róbalo. - The weather out at sea got nasty and Don Luis' boat got caught up in a Norte. - Pepe looked for his jersey all over the beach and couldn't find it. - The Coast Guard finally found Don Luis’ boat capsized and up against the rocks of an island. - Don Luis was unconscious, and the soccer jersey was lying next to him. ## Episode 7: Juanito's apology - Doña Amparo discovered that Juanito had hidden the jersey in his dad's boat. - Doña Amparo was very disappointed in Juanito. - Juanito apologized to his mother and promised to be good. - The doctors in the emergency room were still with Juanito's dad. - Juanito and his mother waited for hours. ## Episode 8: A delicious breakfast - Doña Lupita arrived and woke Juanito and his mother with a delicious Mexican breakfast of huevos rancheros, tortillas, frijoles negros, and café con leche. ## Episode 9: Juanito's forgiveness - The doctors came out to the waiting room and said that Don Luis is fine and awake. - Juanito apologized to Doña Lupita and said he didn't want to lose her friendship. - Doña Lupita told Juanito, “friends make mistakes, and we learn from them.” - Juanito apologized to his father and said he was very sorry for stealing Pepe's soccer jersey. - Don Luis told Juanito that honesty is a very important value. - Juanito told his father that he would tell Pepe what he did and apologize to him. - Juanito ran out of the hospital to the parking lot to find Pepe. - Juanito apologized to Pepe and told him he was ashamed of his behavior. - Pepe forgave Juanito. - Both kids hugged and ran to start another soccer match, wearing the same jersey.
