# Steps in Special Rescue Operations ## 1. Preparation - Train with fire departments and rescue teams - Ensure all equipment is functional - Review rescue protocols and team roles ## 2. Response - Activate emergency response teams - Dispatch appropriate resources and personnel - Notify specialized rescue units if needed ## 3. Arrival & Scene Size-Up - Conduct a 360° assessment of the scene - Identify hazards (fire, gas leaks, unstable structures) - Determine number and condition of patients - Establish command and communication ## 4. Stabilization of the Scene - Secure the area to prevent further injury - Use control zones (Hot, Warm, Cold) - Implement traffic control (if on roads/highways) ## 5. Access - Choose safe and efficient entry points - Open doors if possible (Try before you pry!) - Use glass-breaking tools or cutting equipment when necessary ## 6. Disentanglement - Free the patient from trapped positions - Remove debris, cut seatbelts, and stabilize injuries - Be mindful of airbags, sharp metal, and hazardous fluids ## 7. Removal - Safely extricate the patient using backboards, scoop stretchers, or basket stretchers - Maintain spinal immobilization if required - Ensure continuous medical care during removal ## 8. Transport - Move the patient to an ambulance or air medical unit - Provide ongoing care en route to the hospital - Relay patient status and injuries to receiving medical teams
