# Nervous System The image describes the structure and function of the nervous system. **Functions:** * **Detect and respond to stimulus:** The nervous system's primary function is to detect and respond to changes in both the internal and external environments. * **Maintain a balanced internal process (homeostasis):** This involves maintaining stable internal conditions like body temperature, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels. * **Control and coordinate organ functions:** The nervous system directs the coordinated activity of organs in the body. **Components:** * **Peripheral Nervous System:** This system connects to the central nervous system, and the external environment. * **Stimulus:** The starting point of the system's actions, including both internal and external stimuli, such as blood pressure, external light, sound smell touch. * **Sensory Receptors (organ):** Examples of sensory organs include eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin which receive and detect various stimuli. * **Sensory Nerves:** Nerves conduct impulses from sensory receptors to the central nervous system. * **Brain:** The Brain intercepts the Nerve Impulse. * **Effector:** This is the action or response that takes place in order to respond to the impulse by the brain, and ultimately by the target muscles, organs or glands. * **Central Nervous System:** This includes the brain and spinal cord that process information. * **Brain:** The main control center for thoughts, emotions, and memories. It also interprets the impulses that it receives. * **Spinal Cord:** Connects the brain to the peripheral nervous system enabling to communicate. It carries impulses from the brain to other parts of the body, and also carries impulses related to reflexes from the body to the spinal cord. * **Cranial Nerves (12 pairs):** These nerves originate directly from the brain and carry sensory and motor information related to the head and neck. * **Spinal Nerves (31 pairs):** These arise from the spinal cord and are connected to various parts of the body, enabling communication between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. **Damage to the Nervous System:** Damage to the nervous system can lead to temporary to complete paralysis. **Diagrammatic Summary of the Nervous System Function NS:** 1. Detect stimulus 2. Sense information in form nerve impulse 3. Interpret impulse 4. Produces response **Diagram:** The diagram includes a simplified representation of the human body to illustrate the major components of the nervous system mentioned above, including sensory organs.
