NB 3172 SPECIAL TECHNIQUE: HANDLING OF FORENSIC SPECIMEN, TOXICOLOGY & SPECIAL CASES Dr Noor Hazfalinda Hamzah Toxicology scientific study of poisons including how they are detected, actions on human body, and treatment Sample collection requires extensive training, experience and supervision. Diverse samples – from rape kits to items found at crime scene Samples may be exposed to outside elements – weather, environment Trace samples – single hair, minute drops of blood. Perform job in variety of environments and provide unquestionably accurate results Chain of custody is defined as the “process for maintaining control and accountability of each specimen from the point of collection to final disposition of the specimen.” This process is followed for various reasons Forensic sample collection, handling, testing Workplace drug testing Must document identity of every individual handling the sample. Chain of custody form is required. Specimen must be placed in permanently sealed, tamper-evident container. Every individual who handles every aliquot must sign form. Healthcare Workers who are employed at labs that provide workplace drug testing receive additional chain of custody training.
