Hello, dear reader. Thank you for purchasing this book. We hope it serves you well on your language learning journey. Not all words are created equal. The purpose of this frequency dictionary is to list the most common Spanish words in descending order, so you can learn this language as fast and efficiently as possible. First, we would like to illustrate the value of a frequency dictionary. For the purpose of example, we have combined frequency data from various languages (mainly Romance, Slavic and Germanic languages) and made it into a single chart. Word Frequency 100 90 80 70 Vocabulary % 60 50 40 Spoken 30 Written 20 10 0 Amount of Words The sweet spots, according to the data seem to be: Amount of Words Spoken Written  100 53% 49%  1.000 85% 74%  2.500 92% 82%  5.000 95% 89%  7.500 97% 93%  10.000 98% 95% Above data corresponds with Pareto´s law. Pareto’s law, also known as the 80/20 rule, states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. In language learning, this principle seems to be on steroids. It seems that just 20% of the 20% (95/5) of the most used words in a language account for roughly all the vocabulary you need. 5 To put this further in perspective: The Collins Spanish Dictionary (August 2016 edition) lists over 310.000 words in current use, while you will only need to know 1.62% (5000 words) to achieve 95% and 89% fluency in speaking and writing. Knowing the most common 10.000 words, or just 3.25%, will net you 98% fluency in spoken language and 95% fluency in written texts. Keeping this in mind, the value of a frequency dictionary is immense. Study the most frequent words, build your vocabulary and progress quickly. One more frequency asked question needs to be answered. Well, how many words do you need to know for varying levels of fluency? While it’s important to note that it is impossible to pin down these numbers and statistics with 100% accuracy, these are a global average of multiple sources. According to research, this is the amount of vocabulary needed for varying levels of fluency: 1. 250 words: the essential core of a language. Without these words, you cannot construct any meaningful sentences. 2. 750 words: are used every single day by every person who speaks the language. 3. 2500 words: should enable you to express everything you could possibly want to say, although some creativity might be required. 4. 5000 words: the active vocabulary of native speakers without higher education. 5. 10,000 words: the active vocabulary of native speakers with higher education. 6. 20,000 words: the amount you need to be able to recognize passively to read, understand, and enjoy a work of literature such as a novel by a notable author. 6 Caveats & Limitations. 1. A frequency list is never “The Definite Frequency List.” Depending on the source material analyzed, you may get different frequency lists. A corpus on spoken word differs from source texts based on a written language. That is why we chose subtitles as our source, because, according to science, subtitles cover the best of both worlds: they correlate with both spoken and written language. The frequency list is based on an analysis of roughly 20 gigabytes of Spanish subtitles. Visualize a book with almost 16 million pages, or 80.000 books of 200 pages each, to get an idea of the number of words that have been analyzed for this book. If you were to read the source text used for this book, it would take you around 100 years of reading 24/7. A large base text is absolutely vital in order to develop an accurate frequency list. Since 100 years of simply reading and then trying to process the text is a bit much for one person, we have called in additional power to help us establish the frequency rankings. The raw data included over 1 million entries, or different “words”. The raw data has been lemmatized; words are given in their dictionary form. 2. Creating an accurate frequency list is more complicated than it seems. Above mentioned method of classification does come with its own complications. Take for example, the word  poder(se)-vb; m – be able; power Obviously, poder is most often used as a verb. However, you will see the word rank highly as one of the most common nouns. With our current methods, it is impossible to determine exactly how often poder is used as a noun as opposed to the verb. But while we developed an accurate method of estimating the correct position of “poder-m – power”, (around the 500th most common word in Spanish), we decided we don’t want duplicate entries in our frequency dictionaries. Why? Poder is a single dictionary entry, and it’s choosing between either “hey, you have duplicate entries, your list is wrong.” and “hey, poder isn’t the #9 most common noun, your list is wrong.” (actual customer feedback, paraphrased.) Because instances like poder are very few and in-between, we kindly ask you to use your common sense while using this dictionary. Decide for yourself on not whether you should learn a translation or not. Another difficulty is the conjugated verbs. Some conjugated vers can be classified as multiple parts of speech. Take for example dicho. It originally ranked somewhere around the 147th most common Spanish word. 7 As a conjugated verb, dicho is the past participle of “decir-vb – to say” and translates as “said”, while as a noun it means “saying, expression”. No way, José, that “saying, expression” is the most 147th most used Spanish word. As previously stated, our words are lemmatized, and decir is already listed at place 77. (Please refer to our upcoming book on Spanish verbs for detailed verb information, all regular and irregular conjugations and bilingual text example sentences.) We did develop a method to accurately estimate the occurrence of dicho as a noun. By the time of writing “dicho-m – saying, expression” hoovers around the 11.702th place of the most common Spanish words. It is very unlikely that it will enter the 10.000 most common Spanish words, and thus will be out of the scope of our frequency dictionary series. 3. Nouns We tried our best to keep out proper nouns, such as “James, Ryan, Alice as well as “Rome, Washington” or “the Louvre”. Names of countries are an exception to the rule, and are included. Some common proper nouns have multiple translations. For the ease of explanation, the following example is given in English. “Jack” is a very common first name, but also a noun (a jack to lift up a vehicle) and a verb (to steal something). So is the word “can” It is a conjugation of the verb “to be able” as well as a noun (a tin can, or a can of soft drink). With the current technology, it is unfortunately not possible to precisely identify the correct frequency placements of the above words. We came up with a method to accurately estimate the correct placement of these words. In example, a competitor’s frequency dictionary on the English language listed the noun “can”, like a can of coke, as the 247th most used word in the English language. Our methods would list it around the 3347th most used word. While not perfect, I can tell you that our method is more accurate than theirs. 4. This word doesn’t belong there! Some entries you might find odd in their respective frequency rankings. We were surprised a couple of times ourselves while creating this series. Keep in mind that the frequency list is compiled from a large amount of text, and may include words you wouldn’t use yourself. But you might very well encounter them. In our opinion, it is important you do know these words. Store them somewhere in your passive vocabulary, instead of trying to integrate them into your active vocabulary. But in the end, it’s up to you whether you think you should learn a word, or skip it. 8 5. This is not a Spanish word! You might find non-Spanish loanwords in this dictionary. We decided to include them, because if they´re being used in subtitle translation, it is safe to assume the word has been integrated into the Spanish general vocabulary. 6. Vulgarities We also decided to keep out vulgarities, even though these are rather common in daily speech. We wanted to keep this book appropriate for readers of all ages. We tried to imagine what a modern-day middle American woman would take offense to, and drew the line there. At the same time, some words absolutely needed to be clarified. In rare occasions, the usage of vocabulary items can differ severely between Spanish spoken in Latin America and Spanish spoken in Europe. It could lead to pretty awkward situations if you were not aware of these differences. These words have been censored in a way that one can still deduce their meaning, if one is already in the know. Kids, ask your parents. In example:  coger-vb - to take, f*ck (LA) 7. Parallel text example sentences Some sentences are easy, some are more difficult. Some are a direct translation, some are more loosely translated. Some mimic spoken language, some mimic written language. Some are more high-brow, some are more colloquial. In short, we tried to include a mix of different types of language, just like you would encounter in real life. Example sentences are great, because they show you Spanish word usage in context. You get to learn extra vocabulary from the sentences, since they’re in parallel text. And since you’ll encounter important, common words over and over again, you will ingrain those words faster in your long-term memory. 8. Final thoughts We are pretty confident our frequency ranking is as solid as it can be, keeping above pitfalls in mind. Still, this frequency list includes 25 extra words to compensate for any irregularities you might encounter. Or you might disagree with the addition of non-Spanish loanwords. So instead of the 5001 – 7500 most common words, you actually get the 5001-7525 most common words. And one more thing. The big secret to learning language is this: build your vocabulary, learn basic grammar and go out there and speak. Make mistakes, have a laugh and then learn from your mistakes. Wash, rinse, repeat.. We hope you enjoy this frequency dictionary and that it helps you in your journey of learning Spanish. 9 How To Use This Dictionary abbreviation abr prefix pfx adjective adj preposition prp adverb adv pronoun prn article art suffix sfx auxiliary verb av verb vb conjunction con verb (reflexive) vbr contraction contr singular sg interjection int plural pl noun f(eminine), m(asculine) (coll) colloquial language numeral num (se) reflexive verb marker particle part (ES) European Spanish phrase phr (LA) Latin America Spanish Verbs Some verbs can be used reflexively. Verbs that can be used reflexively are marked by “(se)”. Only when the verb has a different meaning when used reflexively, we added the qualifier “vbr” to indicate the meaning of the reflexive verb. Word Order Different parts of speech are divided by “;”. Generally speaking, the more common translations are given first. Translations We made the decision to give the most common translation(s) of a word, and respectively the most common part(s) of speech. It does, however, not mean that this is the only possible translations or the only part of speech the word can be used for. International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) The pronunciation of foreign vocabulary can be tricky. To help you get it right, we added IPA entries for each entry. If you already have a base understanding of the pronunciation, you will find the IPA pronunciation straightforward.
