NURS 345 NURSING RESEARCH Session 12 Research Reports and Dissemination MS KAFUI HOBENU ([email protected]) Dept. of Research, Education and Administration, SoNM SCHOOL OF NURSING & MIDWIFERY 2024/2025 Academic Year MS KAFUI HOBENU 1 Lecture Overview A research report is the compilation of the entire project. The format of presentation depends on the type of report in question. This session describes the types of research reports and ways of disseminating the findings of such reports SPECIAL Session Objectives The objectives of this session are to; Outline the various types of research reports Describe the methods of dissemination of research reports SPECIAL Session Outline The key topics to be covered in the session are as follows: Topic one: Research Reports Topic two: Dissemination of Research Results SPECIAL Reading List Read Chapter 4 Polit, D. F., & Beck, C. T. (2010). Essentials of Nursing Research: Appraising Evidence for Nursing Practice: Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. SPECIAL What is a research report Introduction What is a Research Report A research report is a publication that reports on the findings of a research project or alternatively scientific observations on or about a subject. The purpose of research report is to convey the interested persons the whole result of study in sufficient detail and to determine himself the validity of the conclusions. SPECIAL Types of Research Reports The research reports are usually complied into documents known as Theses/ Dissertations/ Projects. They are presented to assessment bodies at the following levels PhD Masters Undergraduate projects Other forms are journal articles, posters, oral presentation at conferences, etc., SPECIAL Format for theses/dissertations/projects Preliminary pages Title page Acknowledgement Table of content List of tables List of figures Abstract SPECIAL Format for theses/projects cont. Main body Chapter 1: Introduction/background Chapter 2: Literature review Chapter 3: Methods Chapter 4: Results Chapter 5: Discussion Chapter 6: Summary, implications, conclusion, recommendations Supplementary pages List of references Appendices SPECIAL Undergraduate Project Work Undergraduate research projects can be designed to fit a variety of class constructs and to promote student learning at all levels of undergraduate education. Undergraduate research projects can be student or faculty initiated, and students can either participate in a work in progress or enter a project at its start. Project work is a series of activities that allows the students to study, do research and act by themselves using their abilities, interests, personal experience and aptitudes. SPECIAL Dissertation vs. Thesis When it is completed, a research project marks the end of an undergraduate degree program, a thesis marks the end of a Masters program while a dissertation is done during a doctoral study. In some countries, the terms thesis and dissertation are used interchangeably. The degree of scholarship determines the kind of award that is given on completion of the research SPECIAL Dissemination of research reports Introduction Dissemination of Research Reports Evidence from nursing studies is communicated through research reports that describe what was studied, how it was studied, and what was found. Research reports—especially those for quantitative studies—are often daunting to readers without research training. Researchers communicate information about their studies in various ways. The most common types of research reports are theses and dissertations, books, conference presentations, and journal articles. SPECIAL Conference Presentations Conference presentations are an important avenue for communicating research information. Results are typically disseminated more quickly than in the case of journal publication. Conferences also offer an opportunity for dialogue between researchers and conference attendees. They are done orally or as posters SPECIAL Oral Presentations Research findings are presented at conferences as oral presentations Oral presentations follow a format similar to that used in journal articles. The presenter is typically allotted 10 to 20 minutes to describe key features of the study. SPECIAL Poster Presentations In poster sessions, many researchers simultaneously present visual displays summarizing their studies, and conference attendees circulate around the room perusing these displays. SPECIAL Journal Articles Research journal articles summarize studies in professional journals. The typical research article is brief—generally only 10 to 20 double-spaced manuscript pages This means that researchers must condense a lot of information about the study into a short report. SPECIAL Content of Research Journal Articles Typically follow a conventional organization called the IMRAD format Introduction Methods Results and Discussion The Title, Abstract and References are all included in the report SPECIAL Dissemination of Research Results Both qualitative and quantitative researchers disseminate their findings, most often by publishing reports of their research as journal articles, which concisely communicate what the researcher did and what was found. Again research dissemination can be done through oral and poster presentations. Using these modes of dissemination allows the audiences to ask questions for better understanding of the results SPECIAL Summary This session has examined the types of research reports that are derived from research studies. These are project reports, theses and dissertations The dissemination of research findings can be done through publications in research journals, oral and poster presentations SPECIAL References Polit, D.
