Sociology Final Study Guide Hyper-optimism Racism, elitism, sexism, is in the past These topics are only brought up for government policies Ex. affirmative action Supports colorblindness Hyper-pessimism Racism, elitism, sexism, is present Different factions focus on different issues… Ex. Latino → Latinos rights Women → Women’s rights Blacks → Black rights If the groups joined together they would be more powerful The groups not joining together works in favor of the dominant culture Democracy, Equality, Justice Racism, elitism, and sexism are societal problems Aim of this course Defensiveness Racism, elitism, and sexism are problems BUT they are not my fault Ex. “I didn't own slaves”, “I have black friends” Supports individualism and meritocracy Attempts to not be racism, elitism, and sexist BUT doesnt nothing to reform society View as individual problems not societal Leads to blaming the victim Ex. Being friends with someone who makes racist comments and not saying anything about it Troubles vs Issues C. Wright Mills came up with this concept Troubles are personal problems Issues are social problems There are no troubles only issues, but we lack awareness Ex. Blaming a child for failing 2nd grade but when you realize that they were not the only ones (gaining awareness) there is a broader issue at hand Issues impact everyone, even if not directly related Ex. Cancer patients are affected by their diagnosis as well as their personal relationships Everything is an issue, but we lack awareness Multicultural Diversity within a society (country) Many cultures can exist within a society Ex. Asian American in U.S, Latinx Americans in U.S Cross-Cultural/Global Diversity among societies Comparing cultures (countries) to another Ex. American food (U.S) vs. Mexican food (Mexico)
