# Physical Education: Snorkeling ## Snorkeling Snorkeling is peeking through life underneath water by swimming with the aid of a snorkel and mask. Through snorkeling, one can observe the underwater attractions for a longer period of time, without the need to constantly resurface to gasp for air, and with relatively lesser effort. ## How did Snorkeling Begin? - **3000 B.C. HOLLOW REED** - Skin divers of the island Crete in the Mediterranean used hollow reeds to breath while submerged in water as they collected sponges - **9000 B.C. ANIMAL SKINS WERE FILLED WITH AIR** - An ancient bas-relief dating 900 B.C. depicted divers in Assyria using animal skin filled with air to lengthen their stay underwater - **300 B.C. DIVING BELL** - Alexander the Great promoted the first diving bell, a cauldron trapping air for underwater breathing. - Though limiting mobility, Aristotle described a primitive snorkel as resembling an elephant's trunk, connecting divers to the surface for air. - **1300s EYE GOGGLES FROM SHELLS OF TORTOISE** - Persian divers used eye goggles made from thinly sliced and polished tortoise shells for improved vision. - **1400s HOLLOWED TUBE AND SKETCH OF WEBBED SWIMMING GLOVES** - Leonardo de Vinci proposed and created the first contemporary snorkel, a hollow tube designed attached to the leather-head helmet of the diver, allowing to breathe even when face was submerged underwater. - He also had a sketch of webbed swimming gloves, an idea that led to the modern-day fins. - **1717 WOODEN PADDLES** - Benjamin Franklin came up with an idea of using wooden paddle attached to the hands and feet to help swimmers swim faster. - **1912 MODERN FINS** - Modern fins were invented by Frenchman Louis de Corlieu. - Patent for this was obtained in 1933. ## Guidelines - Make sure you understand the manufacturer's guidelines when using their masks. Improper use of a mask, or use other than for snorkeling, may result in injury or death. - Never snorkel alone. "The more the merrier" applies here. Ensure that you and your partners have a safety check system in place. - Be familiar with your gear. Test your snorkel mask out in a pool BEFORE your vacation. Get used to breathing with it, especially if you have never snorkeled or used that particular equipment before. - Be aware of conditions. Always observe first and be aware of dangerous water conditions and adverse weather. - TAKE REGULAR BREAKS. It is recommended to remove the mask and take a break at least once every 30 minutes of use. Make sure you are breathing fresh air during the break. - Make sure you are hydrated before stepping foot in the ocean! Dehydration can make a lot of things difficult, including snorkeling. - Watch out: they sting. Avoid touching animals, coral, and plant life. It'll simply be better for everyone, and it will help eliminate the chances of an accident. - Do not participate in snorkeling if you are under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. ## Mask - Mask serves as the viewing device in appreciating the world beneath the water. ## Parts - **STRAP** holds the mask to the face underwater. - **MASK SKIRT** is the soft flexible material that seals the mask around the face. - **NOSE POCKET** cushions and protects the nose. Some masks have the purge valve, a little flap valve located at the bottom of nose pocket that helps in removing the water that has entered the masks. - **CLASSIC SNORKEL** has the most basic part, the solid tube and the mouthpiece. Sometimes, this can be bent to a specific shape. - **SNORKEL WITH A FLEXIBLE TUBE** below the strap attachment point is more comfortable than the classic snorkel. The flexible tube allows the top and mouthpiece to rotate the different angles to better fit in face. - **PURGE VALVE** A common feature of many snorkels is the purge valve. This is a small valve just lower than the mouth that empties the collected water that comes down the tube when one blows it out. | Part | Description | |---|---| | Open Top | | | Mouthpiece | | | Reservoir | | | Splash Guard | | | Snorkel Clip | | | Flex Tube | | | Dry Valve & Splash Guard | | - **SNORKEL VEST** Snorkel vests are small and inflatable, which provide more buoyancy while floating on was. This will help in consuming less energy in moving around. However, one must take note that stone vest is not equivalent and should never be used as a substitute to life vest. - **SKIN PROTECTION** Snorkeling may require one to be under the sun for some time. In order to protect the skin fig- the heat of the sun, one may use a good biodegradable sunscreen or a better choice will be wearing a long sleeve rash guard. The shirt may also provide jellyfish sting protection. However, if insulation is needed from the cold waters, then a wetsuit will be a better option. - **SWIMMING CAP** The swimming cap is a big help in keeping hair out of the snorkel and the face as well. It willas help in preventing the scalp from burning on a sunny day. - **MASK DEFOGGER** Mask defogger helps prevent the mask from fogging up. Be sure to choose one that is nos toxic, biodegradable, and alcohol free for one's protection and for the protection of marine life. ## How to get started with the centre snorkel
