# Sound Waves and Hearing **Sound Waves** - are vibrations that pass through the molecules of a medium/material - a type of longitudinal wave - travel as a series of compressions and rare factions - need particles to be transmitted - produced by vibrating sources **Rare Factions** - Region in between where the particles are furthest apart, spread out **Compressions** - Regions where the vibrating particles are closest together, squished together. **Diagram:** A sketch of a speaker box is shown. A series of circles are drawn on separate vertical lines, illustrating the concept of compressions (the circles close together) and rarefactions (the circles spread out). The top circles show compressions and the bottom circles show rarefections from the speaker box. Dashed lines show the signal moving from the speaker.
