Blood supply of the Brain By: Dr. Mariam Atef Lecturer of Anatomy Ends at the base of the brain into 2 terminal branches: Anterior cerebral artery Middle cerebral artery ICA : It ends at the base of the brain into 2 terminal branches: Anterior cerebral artery Middle cerebral artery Rt and Lt vertebral arteries unite at the lower border of pons to form basilar artery which passes infront of the pons , at the upper border of pons it divides into 2 posterior cerebral arteries Vertebral artery Origin: it arises at the root of neck as a branch from the first part of subclavian artery Course: it has 4 parts The Fourth part: enters the cranial cavity through foramen magnum, ascends upwards and medially on the medulla to reach the lower border of the pons Termination: it ends at the lower border of pons where the 2 vertebral arteries unite to form the basilar artery Basilar artery Origin: begins at the lower border of pons by the union of the 2 vertebral arteries Course: ascends in the basilar groove of the pons Termination: at the upper border of pons by dividing into 2 posterior cerebral arteries. Internal Carotid Artery Origin: It is one of the 2 terminal branches of the common carotid artery opposite the upper border of thyroid cartilage Course : is divided into 4 parts Cervical part, Petrous part, cavernous part and supracavernous part Termination: it terminates on the lateral side of the optic chiasma just below the anterior perforated substance. by dividing into : Anterior cerebral (smaller) and Middle cerebral (Larger) arteries Circle of Willis It is the anastomoses between the branches of the 2 ICA and the basilar artery in the interpeduncular fossa at the base of the brain. 6 large arteries and 3 communicating arteries Posterior cerebral arteries MCQ’s
