Module Subject Code CS 1 Computer Science 1 Module Code 4.0 ICT Systems Lesson Code 4.2 Hardware Time Frame 30 minutes TA ATA Components Tasks (min)a (min)b Target By the end of this learning guide module, the students 1 should be able to: 1. Correctly classify the different components of the hardware in the given seatwork. 2. Demonstrate at least 3 ways on how to take care of the computer hardware in a 5- minute video presentation that is given as assignment. 3. Design a realia that represents how computer hardware works as a project. Hook I’m sure you all have computers at home, either a desktop or 4 a laptop or a netbook. When you use your computer, what do you often do with it? Do you play? Do you watch movies? Do you use it to type your assignments, or research on the internet? Or simply to connect to the internet for any purpose? Do you know the different parts of your computer? Do you know how the different parts work together to help you do the tasks that you want to do on the computer? Ignite The Computer Hardware 14 Hardware – the physical component of the computer system CS 1 Page 1 of 10 Figure 1: The Hardware Components (Computer Hope,2018) There are Four Categories of Computer Hardware 1. Input devices – devices which allow the user to communicate to the computer Based on the description of input devices, we have examples below. Figure 2: Examples of Input Devices(ExamplesOf.net,2017) 2. Processing devices – devices which are responsible for transforming data into meaningful information to the users. Based on the description of processing devices, we have examples below. a. The Central Processing System CS 1 Page 2 of 10 Figure 3: The CPU (ComputerHope,2020) Alternately referred to as a processor, central processor, or microprocessor, the CPU is the central processing unit of the computer. A computer's CPU handles all instructions it receives from hardware and software running on the computer.1 b. The Video Card Figure 4: The Video Card (Computer Hope,2019) Alternatively known as a display adapter, graphics card, video adapter, video board, or video controller, a video card is an expansion card that connects to a computer motherboard. It is used to create a picture on a display; 1 Computer Hope(2020).https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/c/cpu.htm CS 1 Page 3 of 10 without a video card, you would not be able to see this page. Specifically, it's a piece of hardware inside your computer that processes images and video, some of the tasks normally handled by the CPU. 2 c. The Motherboard Figure 5: The Motherboard (Computer Hope,2020) The motherboard is a printed circuit board and foundation of a computer that is the biggest board in a computer chassis. It allocates power and allows communication to and between the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components.3 d. The Network Card 2 Computer Hope(2019).https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/v/video-card.htm 3 Computer Hope(2020).https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/m/mothboar.htm CS 1 Page 4 of 10 Figure 6: The Network Card (Computer Hope,2019) Short for network interface card, the NIC is also referred to as an Ethernet card and network adapter. A NIC is a computer expansion card for connecting to a network 4 e. The Sound Card Figure7: The Sound Card (Computer Hope,2018) A sound card is an expansion card or IC for producing sound on a computer that can be heard through speakers or headphones. It is alternatively referred to as an audio output device, sound board, or audio card. Although the computer doesn't need a sound card, it's included on every machine as either in an expansion slot or built into the motherboard5. 4 Computer Hope(2019).https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/n/nic.htm 5 Computer Hope (2018). https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/s/souncard.htm CS 1 Page 5 of 10 3. Storage devices - any hardware capable of holding information either temporarily or permanently. It is alternatively referred to as digital storage, storage, storage media, or storage medium. There are two types of storage devices used with computers: a primary storage device, such as RAM, and a secondary storage device, such as a hard drive. Secondary storage can be removable, internal, or external. Based on the description of storage devices, we have examples below. a. Primary Storage - a medium that holds memory for short periods of time while a computer is running. Example is the Random Access Memory (RAM). Figure 8: The RAM (Computer Hope,2020) b. Secondary Storage - alternatively referred to as external memory, secondary memory, and auxiliary storage. It is a non-volatile device that holds data even if the computer is turned off. Figure 5: Variety of Storage Devices (Mukalele, Rogers,2018) CS 1 Page 6 of 10 4. Output devices – devices which allow the computer to communicate back to the user Based on the description of output devices, we have examples below. Figure 6: Output Devices (Try Education Types,2019) There are also input devices that can be used as output devices. In this case, we call them input/output devices. Refer to the picture below for examples. Input / Output Devices Figure 7: Input and Output Devices (Raman, Habibur,2018) CS 1 Page 7 of 10 In order to understand how the hardware works, please watch this 4-minute video on how computers work in youtube with url https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKGZlaPlVLY The computer hardware works by receiving input data into the computer through the input device. These data are received and stored in the Random Access Memory (RAM). The CPU fetches these data in the RAM and processes these data, one by one, outputs the result of processing to the output device and stores to storage devices when it receives instruction to store it. Navigate Seatwork 7 I. Classify the given hardware component whether input, output, input/output, processing, or storage device. Write your answers in the box under their BEST device classification. Track ball Knot The Hardware - 4 The physical, tangible part of the computer system Composed of four categories : – Input – Processing – Storage – Output As assessment activities, do the following: 1. Make a realia showing how the different parts of the computer hardware work. 2. Make a 5-minute video of yourself showing at least 3 ways of taking care of the computer hardware. Upload your video as an assignment in the LMS or save in a flash drive and submit. CS 1 Page 9 of 10 References: 1. Computer Hope (Nov. 13, 2018). What is a System Unit?
