LCCI GQ’s SQA DIPLOMA IN GLOBAL CULINARY ARTS SKILLS FOR EMPLOYMENT (Q & A) 1. Explain the principle of ‘work-life balance’ Ans: Work-life balance is a key part of self-care when juggling the responsibilities of your workday, home life, and relationships with your family members and other loved ones. Work-life balance is often used to manage your time and energy in a way that leaves you feeling fulfilled and engaged as a whole human being. The idea includes concepts such as: Effective time management Stress management Burnout prevention The benefits of work-life balance are far-reaching and extend to both you and your company. Fatigue- This negatively impacts focus and productivity. Your professional reputation can suffer if you’re making mistakes or forgetting commitments. Poor health- This is a result of both stress and neglecting healthy habits. Stress can affect medical conditions and increases the possibility of substance misuse. Negative impacts on relationships- This is due to neglect. This undermines one of your major support pillars as a social being. Work-life balance is important because it reduces stress, helps avoid burnout, increases job satisfaction, and improves overall health and well-being. You can enhance your quality of life, increase productivity, and experience greater satisfaction in both your professional and personal lives by finding the right balance. 2. Define multitasking. Ans: Multitasking, the running of multiple programs (sets of instructions) in one computer at the same time. Multitasking is used to keep all of a computer’s resources at work as much of the time as possible. It is controlled by the operating system, which loads programs into the computer for processing and oversees their execution until they are finished. OR Multitasking is putting your focus on more than one task at once, whether at exactly the same time or through repeatedly switching back and forth between tasks. The reason for multitasking is that individuals have multiple tasks to complete, and each might have a high urgency. Therefore, to simultaneously complete the tasks, an individual chooses to handle all of them at the same time. It is important to note that there are tasks that can be handled with others and some that require maximum attention. Multitasking is handled by individuals differently. One person can effectively handle multitasking, while another person can find it difficult to work on multiple tasks. 3. Define effective scheduling. Ans: A schedule is a plan that lists down your activities to help you prioritize your time and achieve your goals. In a business context, a schedule outlines an employee’s work days and times. It includes information like working hours and shifts, employee names, and duties or responsibilities for that period. Effective scheduling techniques can help manage these complex operations by optimizing production and minimizing waste. Effective scheduling is critical to the success of any manufacturing operation. It involves planning and organizing the resources and activities required to produce goods or services, ensuring that they are completed on time and within budget. 4. How does flexibility aid planning? Ans: While having a structure and a plan is important, we also need to be flexible and adaptable to the context and the situation. We cannot predict or control everything that might happen during or after the planning process, such as changes in the environment, the needs, the expectations, or the opportunities. Further to this plan the things that we must get done, for the times when we know we’ll be free and uninterrupted. If that’s not possible, then plan for the time when we are most likely to want to get it done. Planning things around social meet-ups or human interaction can often lead to unaccomplished tasks. Before we start any strategic planning session, we need to have a clear understanding of the purpose and scope of the plan. 5. What is the purpose of mock interviews? Ans: A mock interview is a training exercise that simulates a job interview. In other words, it is a practice interview that, as nearly as possible, resembles a genuine interview. A mock interview process helps candidates gain confidence with the chance to reflect on their non-verbal and verbal communication abilities. It also provides an opportunity for interviewees to make mistakes and work on correcting them in a safe atmosphere. So a candidate can improve his/ her skills, as a result of the instant feedback helps them to present their ideas more effectively. 6. How does routine help in time management? Ans: Before diving into the specifics of daily routines, it's essential to understand the science behind time management. Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities to increase effectiveness and efficiency. In the perpetual race against time, finding effective ways to manage your time is essential. It is pretty tricky for busy bees to figure out how to maximize their productivity on a daily basis. Routine has a profound impact on our brain’s cognitive processes and productivity. It reduces decision fatigue. Making countless decisions throughout the day can deplete your energy and lead to decision paralysis. Hence, a well-designed and well-executed routine minimizes the number of decisions required for simple tasks. 7. Explain ‘time allocation’. Ans: The division of our time amongst our various daily duties and activities is called time allocation. It’s a critical component of personal and professional success that influences output, effectiveness and all-around achievement. Good time management can lead to increased productivity, timely completion of tasks, and high-quality work. On the flip side, poor time management can result in missed deadlines, unfinished work, longer work hours, and decreased productivity. OR Time allocation (also known as time budgeting) is a system of allocating a different amount of time (number of minutes or hours) to your daily tasks and activities. Since time is a precious resource, we cannot afford to waste it. That’s why allocating it properly can help us immensely — both in our personal and professional life. Time allocation is important because it allows us to spend our time in the best way possible. When we distribute our time more smartly, we: Improve our work-life balance, Reduce stress, Achieve our goals faster, and more. By budgeting our time, we’ll be able to spend our time wisely, save energy, and have better career opportunities. 8. Why is regular evaluation necessary? Ans: Performance evaluations can be viewed as one of the more uncomfortable and contentious interactions between supervisors and employees. But when managed professionally, openly, and honestly, evaluations can help enhance working relationships and performance, with both parties benefiting. The performance evaluation is a review based upon an individual’s job performance and assigned duties. A supervisor typically looks at an employee’s skills and accomplishments during a specific time period and tracks whether the employee has lived up to expectations, exceeded them, or failed to meet desired results. Ideally, performance evaluations provide a stepping-stone for the employee and supervisor to identify and discuss areas where performance can be improved. It can also be an important opportunity for employee and manager expectations to be reinforced or clarified.
