Scholars must check in at the office upon arrival on campus after the first tardy bell. The following course of action will be taken when scholars are tardy to class: 1st - Warning/Parent notification 2nd and 3rd tardy- Parent notification with 1 day of D-Hall assigned 4th and each subsequent tardy - Parent notification and disciplinary referral (1 day of ISS per occurrence) CHECKING IN OR OUT: All scholars leaving campus MUST check out through the office. A scholar must be checked out by a parent or an approved contact, as listed in eSchool to check out the scholar, with ID. Scholars will not be called to the office to check out until the person arrives on campus. Scholars may not be checked out by notes. Classes will not be called during the last 15 minutes of the school day to check out scholars. In order to participate in extracurricular activities, the scholar must be present for at least half the day. GIFT & FOOD DELIVERY: In order to minimize disruption of the school day, no deliveries will be accepted for scholars. PCSSD DRESS CODE POLICY: Expectations for scholar dress are outlined for all secondary schools in PCSSD. While it is impossible to identify all modes of dress that might be considered disruptive, it is the intent of SHJHS to provide parents and scholars with as much clarity as possible regarding proper attire. Examples of Expected Dress in Secondary Schools: 1. No sagging. Undergarments should not be seen. 2. Leggings, spandex, jeggings, tights, yoga pants, or any other similar tight-fitting bottoms MUST be covered with a dress, skirt, shorts, or shirt no shorter than the ID badge length from the top of the knee. 3. Pants, jeans, or shorts with tears or fraying that allows skin to show above the ID badge length from the knee must have clothing underneath. 4. Shorts, dresses, skirts worn with or without leggings cannot be shorter than the ID badge length above the knee. 5. Transparent, midriff, holes, backless, low cut, spaghetti straps, tank tops, and sleeveless tops are not allowed. 6. Sleepwear or pajamas are not permitted. Pants must have secured seams at the fly/zipper area. 7. Shoes are required to be worn at all times. Slippers, skates, or other shoes with soft soles are not allowed. 8. Scholars may not wear clothing, outerwear, pins, symbols, or insignia of prohibited organizations or street gangs while at school or at any school-related activity. 9. Scholars may not wear clothing, buttons, patches, jewelry, or any other items with words, phrases, symbols, pictures, or signs that are indecent, profane, suggestive, inflammatory or that have negative overtones that appear to be derogatory or discriminatory. 10. Spike jewelry, chains, and hair picks are not permitted. 11. Head coverings (wider than a headband) and sunglasses are not allowed. Medical exceptions require written approval from a school administrator. 12. School issued Lanyards and ID Badges must be worn at all times. Scholars will be given an opportunity to correct their dress code violation and if they are unable to do so, the parent will be notified and the Scholar will be sent to ISS. Sylvan Hills Junior High SCHOLAR HANDBOOK 2024-2025 IDENTIFICATION (ID) BADGES: ALL scholars must wear a District Issued Identification Badge at ALL times during the school day and on the bus. The ID badge must be worn around the neck, on a school-issued lanyard, and must be visible at all times. Scholars are not to mutilate ID badges: cut, chew, paint, decorate, etc. If the name, photo, and color strip is not visible, the scholar will be required to purchase a new ID. The cost of the replacement ID is $5.00. Temporary ID badges can be purchased before school for $1. Any scholar wishing to purchase a temporary ID badge after the tardy bell rings will result in a tardy and the disciplinary actions that follow. Scholars who do not obtain an ID badge will have the consequence outlined below. CONSEQUENCES FOR ID BADGE VIOLATIONS 1st and 2nd Offense – Verbal warning, parent contact, documentation of the violation 3rd and Each Subsequent Offense – Parent contact and disciplinary referral (1 day of ISS per occurrence) The scholar must correct the violation before attending any classes. ○ (Scholars will wait in the Academic Reflection Center) Items Not Allowed - Toys, stuffed animals, blankets, sunglasses, etc. ○ Confiscated items will be available for pick-up in the front office. ○ Repeat violations will result in required parent pick-up, in the front office. SCHEDULING CLASSES: Schedules for the school year are determined by scholar’s request in the previous spring. Schedule changes are only permitted in extenuating circumstances and must be approved by the Building Principal. SEMESTER TESTS: All 9th Graders and 8th Graders Enrolled in High School Credit Course/s: No exams will be given early. Scholars WILL NOT be allowed to check out during a semester test. OFF LIMITS AREAS: Before School: Scholars who choose to eat breakfast will report to the cafeteria. All other scholars will report directly to the gym. At Lunch: Scholars must remain in the cafeteria for the duration of his/her assigned lunch. LOCKERS: Lockers will not be issued for the 2024-25 school year. LUNCH PROGRAM: Scholars may bring sack lunches from home or eat in the cafeteria. Food or drinks from outside restaurants may NOT be brought to dropped off or delivered. No food or drink (outside of water in a sealable container) will be allowed outside the cafeteria at any time. Scholars are to enter the cafeteria in an orderly manner and get in the lunch lines if purchasing food. Scholars are to stand in a single-file line and face the front of the line. Cutting in the lunch line will result in the scholar being sent to the end of the line. Scholars are not to walk up to other scholars who are in line for ANY reason. They will be sent to the end of the line. Scholars are to remain seated, facing the table, and orderly while in the cafeteria. (Restroom allowances are given with permission). TELEPHONE USE: The office phone is for school business. Scholars may use the phone with permission for emergencies. Scholars will not be called out of class to the telephone, nor will messages be delivered, unless it is an emergency. Scholars should know their transportation plans and necessary information before arriving to school.
