Module II Communicative Grammar Sentence Structure and Fragments Dr. Syeda Aysha Bokhari What is a Sentence? A sentence consists of at least one clause-a word group with a subject and a predicate. The subject identifies a person, place or thing. The predicate tells what the subject does or is, where it is, what it has, or what is done to it. In statements the subject often comes first: Examples Subject Predicate Economists study the production and consumption of goods. The Islamic economic system rewards individual initiative. Sentence Fragments A sentence fragment is part of a sentence punctuated as if it were a whole one: In conversation we often use fragments that make perfectly good sense: “When is she leaving?” “Tomorrow”. “Really”. “No question about it.” Sentence Fragments in Writing Occasionally , sentence fragments also occur in writing: “For so many years college had seemed far-off, but all of a sudden it was there, staring me in the face.
