SCIENCE REPORTING SEISMIC WAVES Science Speakers:Daizerie DATE: September 21, Faith Litaoen & Ruth 2023 Grace Camba Scie nce Table Of Contents 01 Quiz 1 & 2 02 What is seismic waves 03 Discussion Scien ce 04 Quiz Part 01 Quiz 1 Identify what is being asked in the folowing questions 1. Under divergent plate boundary, when a plate separate, what kind of rock will rise to the sea level to fill the gap? 2. What type of boundary is being produced when two plates slide horizontally past each other? 3-4. What will be formed because of the Oceanic-Continental Convergence? 5. What is the longest mountain range in the world? Part 01 Pre-test 1 Read the questions carefully and write the correct answers on your paper. 1. What is the amount of ground displacement in an earthquake is called? a. epicenter b. dip c. slip d. focus 2. the point where movement occured which triggered the earthquake is the? a. dip b. epicenter c. focus d. strike 3. Body waves consist of the: a. P waves only b. S waves only c. P and S waves d. Surface waves 4. Which is faster to travel? a. Surface waves b. P waves c. Q waves d. S waves 5. Which of the following causes seismic waves to form? a. Fire b. Flood c. Earthquake d. Strong winds WHAT IS SEISMIC WAVES? Part one Part two SEISMIC WAVE BODY WAVES Part three Part four SURFACE WAVES TRIVIA! Part 02 WHAT IS SEISMIC WAVES? Seismic wave, vibration, generated by an earthquake, explosion, or similar energetic source and propagated within the Earth or along its surface. Earthquakes generate four principal types of elastic waves;  Body waves  P-waves  S- waves  Surface waves  Love waves  Rayleigh waves Part 02 BODY WAVES -Has two types -travel through earth’s inner layers Part 02 P- waves (Primary waves) -waves that can travel through solid and liquid. -faster than S-waves. Part 02 S- waves (Secondary waves) -waves that travel through solid only. -travel slower than P- waves. Part 03 BODY WAVES Part 03 SURFACE WAVES - Are combinations of transverse and longitudinal waves. -It can ONLY travel through the surface layer (solid) -It causes more damage than the body waves  There are 2 types of Surface waves Part 03 LOVE WAVE There are 2 types of Surface waves  LOVE WAVE - A major type of surface wave having a horizontal motion. - It is the fastest surface wave - named after the British mathematician A.E.H. Love (Augustus Edward Hough Love) Part 03 RAYLEIGH WAVE There are 2 types of Surface waves  RAYLEIGH WAVE - It moves the surface in a circular motion - Named after the British physicist, Lord Rayleigh Science Reporting THANKS FOR LISTENING Science Speakers:Daizerie DATE: September 21, Speaker Faith name:XXX Litaoen & Ruth 2023 Grace Camba Scie nce
