Science News Independent Journalism Since 1921 The Science of Social Connection By Jason Bittel DECEMBER 13, 2024 Recent research reveals some key changes we can make to improve our social lives at any point. In this short article, we explore four key ways in which we can develop our relationships and social connections to have long-lasting positive consequences. The Potential for Social Development Recent studies highlight the potential for continuous improvement in social connections throughout life. Dr. Rachel Miller from the Center for Interpersonal Growth (Miller, 2021) emphasizes that social comfort and engagement can be developed through intentional actions. “With deliberate eRort, people can enhance their social experiences and foster deeper connections,” Miller explains. Building Social Skills Over Time Huang and Lopez (2022) conducted a study demonstrating that participants who engaged in social skill-building exercises reported significant improvements in their sense of belonging and closeness with others. “Social skills, like any other skill, can be cultivated with practice,” notes Huang. “Even small, consistent eRorts can lead to meaningful changes in social dynamics.” Reframing Social Challenges Viewing social challenges as opportunities for growth is a key factor in fostering social development. According to Carter and Singh (2020), individuals who adopt this perspective are more likely to engage in meaningful social interactions and build lasting connections. “Every interaction, even diRicult ones, can be a chance to learn and grow,” Singh explains. The Role of ERort and Persistence Kim and Patel (2019) found that consistent eRort in social settings leads to greater social comfort and engagement over time. “It’s not about being naturally gifted at socializing,” Kim notes. “It’s about being willing to put in the eRort to connect with others.” Conclusion Social connections are not fixed but can be continuously developed through eRort and persistence. By embracing a mindset of growth and learning, individuals can enhance their social experiences and build stronger, more meaningful relationships over time.
