# Plants and Animals in Land Habitats A habitat is a place where a living thing gets the food, water, and shelter it needs to live and grow. ## Rainforest Habitats Rainforest habitats are characterized by high rainfall, high temperatures, and nutrient-poor soil. They are home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. In a forest, some trees are tall. They get a lot of sunlight. Other plants grow in the shady areas low to the ground. ### Layers of the Rainforest #### Canopy Many plants and animals live within the canopy of the rainforest. The canopy gets a lot of sunlight. Flowers and fruits fill the trees. Many animals live in the treetops. #### Understory The understory is shady. Plants that need little sunlight do well there. So do birds, small animals, and reptiles, such as lizards and snakes. #### Emergent Layer This layer consists of the tallest trees, some birds, and insects. No animals live here. #### Canopy Layer This is the thickest layer that hosts most flora and fauna. #### Understory Layer This layer consists of young herbs, shrubs, and bushes. #### Forest Floor This is the darkest, humid layer that hosts insects and giant animals.
