Electromagnet: Science 4 Notes

Summary

These notes explain how electromagnets work. They generate a magnetic field when electricity flows through the metal, and a kind of electromagnetism called electromagnet is the magnet that forms this. Electromagnets have many uses.

Electromagnet A magnetic force can also be formed by means of an electric current. This magnetic force starts when electricity flows through the metals and stops when it is disconnected. This kind of magnetism is called electromagnetism. The magnet that has electromagnetism is called an electromagnet. Electromagnet Generates an electric field only when needed Refrigerator Magnet a kind of permanent magnet with a material that continuously generates a magnetic field Electricity is the flow of the movement of electrons. The movement of electrons in a wire in an electromagnet is similar to the electrons spinning around the nucleus of atom. An electromagnet is very useful in making magnets that can be turned off and on. However, not every metal can be used to create electromagnet. We need to use a magnetic material such as nickel, cobalt, or iron. Any of these materials or their mixtures are used with a solenoid and a battery to create an electromagnet. Other Uses of Electromagnets An electromagnet can produce a stronger magnetic field than a permanent magnet Electromagnets are present in mobile phones Electromagnets are also used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines Loudspeakers use electromagnets to vibrate the cone and produce loud sounds Modern generators and other household appliances also need electromagnets so they can function
