Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorder WHAT IS SCHIZOPHRENIA? is a complex syndrome that inevitably has a devastating effect on the lives of the person affected and on family members. This disorder can disrupt a person’s perception, thought, speech, and movement: almost every aspect of daily functioning. Schizophrenia is generally chronic, and most people with the disorder have a difficult time functioning in society. The disorder will affect about 1% of the population DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA 1. Delusion 2. Hallucinations 3. Disorganized Speech 4. Grossly disorganized/ Catanotic behaviour 5. Negative symptoms The disturbances persist for at least 6 months Impairment in functioning at least have two or more of the listed symptoms SCHIZOPHRENIFORM DISORDER Symptoms similar to schizophrenia but last only a few months. Individuals can often resume normal lives after symptoms subside. SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDER Similar to schizophrenia—tends to be long-term with major life difficulties. Individuals rarely recover without treatment. SUBSTANCE/ MEDICATION INDUCED PSYCHOTIC DISORDER Psychotic symptoms caused by the use of substances (e.g., drugs, alcohol) or medication. SUBSTANCE/ MEDICATION INDUCED PSYCHOTIC DISORDER Psychosis caused by the direct physiological effects of a medical condition. BRIEF PSYCHOTIC DISORDER Sudden onset of delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, or disorganized/catatonic behavior.
