# Porträt: Lenin, Lauda, Lagerfeld - Schauspieler Daniel Brühl Daniel Brühl is one of the few German actors who have made it to Hollywood. His career began early, but not in the traditional way, when he won a reading competition at the age of eight and was then given roles in radio plays by the West German Broadcasting Corporation (WDR). Later, roles as a voice actor followed. Despite these early career steps, Brühl followed his father’s wish to finish school first and then work in film and television. He never attended a drama school. ## Multi-lingual actor Daniel Brühl was born on June 16, 1978, as Daniel César Martín Brühl-González in Barcelona (Spain) to German television director Hanno Brühl and teacher Marisa González-Domingo. Shortly after his birth, he moved with his parents and siblings, Oliver and Miriam, to Cologne, where he later attended the Dreikönigsgymnasium. Thanks to the diverse cultural background of his family, Brühl grew up speaking several languages fluently: German, Spanish, English, Portuguese, French, and Catalan. After graduating, Daniel Brühl focused entirely on acting and got his first television roles. He appeared in his first film, “Schlaraffenland,” in 1999. Further leading roles followed, making him a rising star of German cinema. With “Good Bye, Lenin!” (2003), he achieved international recognition. The drama about the last months of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) attracted 6 million viewers in Germany. ## Success in Hollywood Daniel Brühl has not limited himself to a particular genre in his choice of roles, instead, he is characterized by his great versatility. In 2009, he appeared in “Inglourious Basterds” by Quentin Tarantino as the celebrated sniper Frederick Zoller, who becomes famous in the Third Reich by shooting countless enemy soldiers. In 2013, Brühl finally achieved his breakthrough in Hollywood: for the Formula 1 drama “Rush – Everything for Victory,” he took on the role of the young Niki Lauda and received a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Supporting Actor.” ## “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” - Series with Daniel Brühl The miniseries features the life and career of the legendary German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. In six episodes, it describes how he went from nobody to the chief designer of Chanel and a fashion icon. It all begins in 1972 when Karl Lagerfeld works as a freelance designer in Paris. He has big ambitions and wants to revolutionize the fashion world. However, his life is marked by the bitter rivalry with Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008). Both fall in love with the young author Jacques de Bascher (1951-1989), which only intensifies the rivalry. Daniel Brühl embodies Lagerfeld in a captivating way, offering a deep insight into the person behind the public image. ## German Practice - Now! ### Exercises for the Article on Page 14 and 15: 1.
