Safety and Exercise: Part 1: Exercise Risk Stratification PT 6606 Designed by Drs. Woolstenhulme & Dye Objectives What should you worry about when your patients are exercising? Who’s at risk while exercising? Who shouldn’t exercise? When do you stop exercise? What do you need to know and do to keep your patients safe? For This Presentation: When you see a reference to exercise testing, change it in your mind to aerobic exercise training (or submax testing) Exercise Testing = Exercise Training Apply the safety principles from exercise testing to your application of aerobic exercise training This is most important during your first couple of sessions with your patient/client particularly in the outpatient setting Key Principles Any time you engage in exercise you increase your chances of having an adverse health event Remember: the risks of living a sedentary life are far worse than the risks of dying during exercise Worry more about death from a cardiovascular problem more than an injury in the musculoskeletal system And Remember…. The benefits of exercise Far outweigh the risk of Exercising! [Box 1.4] We identified some last week: CV and Respiratory Improvements Decrease CVP disease risk Less morbidity and mortality Mental health Know Your Patient’s Medical History Why is knowing your patient’s exercise habit important? Key Principles Being sedentary is currently the first thing you want to know to determine if your patient/client is at increased risk for a cardiovascular problem during exercise People who are sedentary are more likely to have cardiovascular events during exercise than people who engage in regular exercise Key Principles The greater the level of exertion (exercise intensity), the greater the risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event This is why we start most novice exercisers/sedentary patients or clients at a lower intensity at first Higher intensities seem to have the most important benefits, but work up to it A Helpful Screening Process Content from: Fig 2.2 ACSM11th.
