Metering is now considered part of the Consumers Installation. (To allow for more competition in the Energy Market). All Assessments must be passed to be deemed competent in the Unit of Competency. (Your workbook may outline the old Assessment regime). If you miss an assessment, or fail an assessment, you will be given an opportunity to apply for a re- assessment. Documentation for a missed assessment is required (such as Doctor’s certificate). Assessment 1 of 6 – Ten (10) x Topic Assessments. Can be completed on campus or off campus. Pass mark 100%. You will have 5 attempts at each Topic Assessment. Topic Assessments 1-5 to be completed prior to Knowledge Test 1, Topic Assessments 6-10 to be completed prior to Knowledge Test 2. Assessment 2 of 6 – Knowledge Test 1. Closed book Test conducted on campus. Assesses Topics 1 to 5 in your workbook. EARTHING SKILLS ASSESSMENT – MAIN SWITCHBOARD TAFE NSW 12 SECTION 1 PROTECTION FOR SAFETY 13 AS/NZS3000:2018 Part 1 provides uniform essential elements that constitute the minimum regulatory requirements for a safe electrical installation Part 2 provides installation practices that achieve certainty of compliance with the essential safety requirements of Part 1 TAFE NSW 14 SCOPE – CLAUSE 1.1 AS/NZS 3000 sets out requirements for the design, construction and verification of electrical installations These requirements are intended to protect persons, livestock, and property from electric shock, fire and physical injury TAFE NSW 15 APPLICATION – CLAUSE 1.2 AS/NZS 3000 may be applied through legislative requirements. (i.e. Can be made legally binding through other documents such as the Electrical Safety Act) The principal application of this Standard is to electrical installations in all types of premises and land used by electricity consumers. TAFE NSW 16 FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES – CLAUSE 1.5 Clause 1.5 outlines the Fundamental Principles of AS/NZS 3000. A good understanding is needed of this section as the words are used throughout AS3000 and the meaning must be understood. TAFE NSW 19 DIRECT CONTACT This definition outlines a situation whereby a person makes direct contact with live parts in normal service. Basic Protection is used to protect against Direct Contact Note: This does not protect from intentional contact – such as placing a conductive component in a socket outlet!! TAFE NSW 22 WORKBOOK SECTION 1 Please complete the following questions: (approx. 10mins) Question 1 to 6 under the Basic Protection (Protection against direct contact) heading in your workbook TAFE NSW 23 INDIRECT CONTACT This definition outlines a situation whereby a person makes contact with a conductive part that is not normally live but has become live under fault conditions. The rules outline ways to protect against this situation – called Fault Protection Indirect contact most usually occurs due to a breakdown in insulation. (Fault condition) Fault Protection includes: Automatic disconnection of supply (fuse/circuit breaker) Use of class 2 equipment (double insulation) Electrical Separation Limit fault current TAFE NSW 24 TOUCH CURRENT AND TOUCH VOLTAGE Touch current is the current that passes through the body when it touches a live part. This can occur under normal or fault conditions. i.e. by Direct or Indirect contact. Touch voltage is the voltage appearing between simultaneously accessible parts. The term is only used in connection with fault protection. Ie Indirect contact. Mitigate voltage differences appearing between exposed conductive parts of equipment and extraneous conductive parts. Provide an effective and reliable low impedance fault path. Provide measures for the connection of exposed conductive parts and extraneous conductive parts. TAFE NSW 28 MEN EARTHING SYSTEM The M.E.N. multiple earthed neutral – earthing system is the standard distribution system for Australia and New Zealand. Under the MEN system, the neutral conductor (PEN) of the distribution system is earthed at the source of supply at regular intervals throughout the system and at each electrical installation connected to the system. TAFE NSW 29 MEN EARTHING SYSTEM MEN system allows for clearing of faults even under conditions of open circuit neutral conductors. It can achieve this, by earth fault current travelling through multiple paths back to the supply source. (Much more on this in the Earthing Section) Clearing faults quickly reduces the risk of touch voltages being present under fault conditions TAFE NSW 30 EARTHING COMPONENTS TAFE NSW 31 EARTHING COMPONENTS TAFE NSW 32 EARTHING COMPONENTS TAFE NSW 33 EARTHING COMPONENTS TAFE NSW 34 EARTH FAULT LOOP The earth fault loop is shown on the right. It is vital that this path has a low impedance allowing the fault to be cleared within the required time. (Ensuring touch voltages are not present) Wiring rules outline the impedance requirements for the fault loop. This is covered in detail in a later section TAFE NSW 35 WORKBOOK SECTION 1 Please complete the following questions: (approx. 15mins) Questions 14 to 25 under the Definitions heading from your workbook TAFE NSW 36 CLASS OF EQUIPMENT Equipment is classified according to its protection method: Class 1 equipment – Earthed Class 2 equipment – Double insulated Class 3 equipment – Extra Low Voltage TAFE NSW 37 WORKBOOK SECTION 1 Please complete the following questions: (approx. 5mins) Question 1 under the Equipment Classes – Protection by Design heading in your workbook TAFE NSW 38 OVERLOAD V SHORT CIRCUIT An overload is an overcurrent occurring in a circuit that is electrically sound. An example could be a socket outlet circuit with too many appliances plug in and operating. A short circuit is a fault current resulting from a fault of negligible impedance between live conductors. An example could be failed insulation between conductors of different voltages, such as 3 phase consumer mains. TAFE NSW 39 PROTECTING AGAINST OVERCURRENT'S AS3000 outlines methods that the electrician must follow to protect persons, livestock, and property against dangers that may arise. (And overcurrent's are definitely a situation that may give rise to danger) Circuits breakers and fuses are common methods used to disconnect the supply when overcurrent's occur. These will be covered in detail in a later section. Circuits need to be appropriately designed to ensure they operate as intended and are safe. Equipment needs to be on dedicated circuits in many cases and installations need to be divided into an appropriate number of separate circuits. Mains cabling (Consumer mains) need to be designed to ensure they can carry the intended load safely and operate as intended. A determination of the maximum demand of the consumer mains and installation needs to be undertaken to choose the correct size of cabling.
