# Organ Systems in the Human Body **Figure 5** illustrates the different body systems and how they work together. **Systems and Their Functions:** * **Circulatory System:** * Structures: Heart, blood vessels * Functions: Transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes; produces movement; helps circulate blood and move food throughout the digestive system. * **Respiratory System:** * Structures: Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs * Functions: Brings in oxygen needed by cells; removes carbon dioxide from the body. * **Skeletal System:** * Structures: Bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons * Functions: Supports body; protects internal organs; allows movement; stores minerals; produces blood cells. * **Integumentary System:** * Structures: Skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, oil glands * Functions: Guards against infection and injury; helps regulate body temperature. * **Muscular System:** * Structures: Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle * Functions: (description is missing) * **Digestive System:** * Structures: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, pancreas * Functions: Breaks down food; absorbs nutrients; removes wastes. * **Defense System (Immune System):** * Structures: Lymph nodes, lymph vessels, white blood cells * Functions: Provides defense against infections; captures bacteria and viruses; fights off disease; swollen glands. **Figure 5** is helpful in labeling and understanding each body system. There may be more than one function for each system. **Note:** A few structures / functions for muscular systems and digestive systems are missing or incomplete in the image.
