Rulg, a 13-year-old with skin the color of warm chocolate, took a deep breath as he stepped out of his quaint suburban house. The morning sun gently kissed the top of his curly hair, hinting at the promise of a bright day ahead. In his hand, he clutched a slightly soggy sandwich, the mayo smearing against the plastic wrap as he waved goodbye to his mother. Her eyes gleamed with excitement, her smile as wide as the horizon. Today was the day he would embark on his journey to become a Pokémon Trainer. As he walked, Rulg's thoughts swirled around the three starter Pokémon of the Galar region. He knew he had to make a choice soon. Each one had its unique charm, but he wasn't ready to decide. Grookey, with its cheeky grin and stick-wielding bravado, seemed like a reliable companion for a journey filled with battles and adventure. Sobble, on the other hand, with its watery eyes and timid nature, resonated with a part of him that craved companionship and protection. Lastly, Scorbunny's fiery spirit and boundless energy reminded him of the passion that had fueled his dreams since he was a child. The options was killing him. The TV in the corner of the local convenience store caught his eye. A reporter in a blue jacket with the region's emblem emblazoned on it was standing in front of a stone formation that looked eerily familiar. "This is a Pokémon Den, folks," she said into her microphone, "but not just any Den. This is where a Power Spot has been confirmed to appear!" Rulg's heart skipped a beat. He'd heard whispers about Power Spots before—rare locations where Pokémon could absorb energy and temporarily grow to massive sizes, a phenomenon known as Dynamaxing. He approached the TV, his curiosity piqued. The camera zoomed in on the Den, revealing a swirl of red and blue light. The reporter's voice grew more urgent. "In a stunning turn of events, a second Power Spot is forming here, inside this very Den, in the same week! This is unheard of! It's like lightning striking twice in the same spot!" Rulg's eyes widened as he took in the news. He knew that these spots were usually miles apart, and for one to appear twice in the same place was nothing short of a miracle. As he absorbed this revelation, Rulg felt a gentle tug at his heart. This was a sign. He had to get to that Den. He had to see this phenomenon for himself. Without another thought, he broke into a sprint, his sneakers pounding the pavement as he headed towards the outskirts of town. The fields grew wild as he approached the location from the news. A gentle breeze whispered through the tall grass, and he could feel the excitement building in his chest. But as he rounded a bend, his heart skipped a beat for a different reason. A flock of Rookidee, usually so cheeky and playful, had surrounded a Sandshrew, pecking at it mercilessly. Rulg's instincts took over, and he dashed towards them, shouting and waving his arms. The Rookidee, startled by the sudden interference, took to the sky, leaving the Sandshrew trembling on the ground. The Sandshrew, sensing safety, took a moment to assess Rulg. It had red eyes that seemed to pierce right through him. They weren't the typical blue that normal Sandshrew had; there was something special about this little creature. It looked up at him, a mix of fear and gratitude in its gaze. Before Rulg could react, it scurried away, disappearing into the tall grass as quickly as it had come. Rulg watched it go, feeling a strange connection to the little Pokémon. He couldn't shake off the feeling that he had made a difference in its life. He brushed the dust from his knees and continued his journey to the lab, the excitement of the Power Spot momentarily forgotten. As he walked, the clouds above began to swirl in an unusual pattern, their edges tinged with a deep shade of crimson. The air grew thick with anticipation. The sky itself seemed to hold its breath, and then, as if on cue, the heavens split open with a deafening crack. The clouds boiled and churned, the red deepening into a menacing shade that painted the entire world below. Rulg's heart raced as he realized the significance of this meteorological anomaly. It was a sign of a wild Dynamax Pokémon nearby—and not just any Pokémon, but the one from the news. The very same Rookidee he had seen earlier had grown to a monstrous size. Panic set in as he heard the beating of wings and the roar of the wind. He turned to see the colossal bird Pokémon barreling towards him, eyes alight with fury. It was easily 40 times his height, its feathers as sharp as knives and its beak as deadly as a sword. The ground trembled beneath its weight, sending shockwaves through Rulg's body. He had no time to think, no time to react. All he could do was run. As he sprinted through the field, his eyes darted around for any escape, but the grass was too tall, the path too narrow. His heart hammered in his chest like a wild drum, and his breaths came in ragged gasps. The Rookidee grew closer, its shadow looming over him like a specter of doom. And then, the unthinkable happened. His foot snagged on a hidden branch, and Rulg's world went sideways. He felt himself hurtling through the air, the sandwich flying from his grip. Time slowed to a crawl as he saw the ground rushing up to meet him, a cushion of green and brown that would do little to break his fall. He hit the earth hard, the wind knocked from his lungs. For a moment, the world spun around him, a kaleidoscope of colors. The Rookidee's cries grew louder, and he could feel the downdraft from its massive wings. Rulg knew he was in trouble, but as he struggled to push himself up, something peculiar happened. The red-eyed Sandshrew that he had saved earlier emerged from the grass, its tiny frame seemingly unaffected by the chaos unfolding around it. The little creature's eyes locked onto the giant bird, and with a fierce snarl, it charged towards the behemoth. In a flash, the Sandshrew's body grew, stretching and distorting until it, too, stood as a Dynamax Pokémon. The ground trembled beneath its paws as it grew to match the Rookidee in size, if not a little taller. The transformation was astonishing, a testament to the power that lay within the small creature. Rulg's heart swelled with hope as he watched the Sandshrew stand protectively in front of him. The two behemoths squared off, the air thick with tension. The battle was fierce and swift. The Sandshrew's red eyes glowed with determination as it swiped at the Rookidee with its massive, sharpened claws. Each strike was met with a furious counterattack, feathers flying as the bird Pokémon pecked and clawed at its sandy adversary. Rulg could see the pain etched on the Sandshrew's face, but it never flinched, never wavered. It was as if the very essence of its being was to protect, and protect it did. With a final, bone-rattling roar, the Sandshrew curled into a ball, its body radiating with a fierce red light. It began to roll, picking up speed as it barreled straight towards the giant Rookidee. The bird Pokémon had no time to react. The collision was deafening, sending a shockwave through the field that knocked Rulg back onto his haunches. The Rookidee, unable to withstand the sheer force of the Rollout move, was sent tumbling end over end. It slammed into the ground with a thud that echoed across the plains, its body shaking from the impact. For a moment, everything was still. The air hung thick with dust and the smell of earth and feathers. Then, with a final, pitiful squawk, the Rookidee's body began to shrink, the power of the Dynamax energy draining from it like sand through an hourglass. Its eyes grew dim, and it slumped to the ground, defeated. Rulg watched in amazement as the Sandshrew, now back to its normal size, trotted over to him, its red eyes filled with concern. The little Pokémon ran up to him, checking if Rulg was okay. He couldn't believe what he had just witnessed. The courage and power that the tiny creature had displayed left him speechless. He knew he had to thank it somehow. Fumbling through his pocket, he found the other half of his sandwich. It was squished and a bit dirty from the fall, but it was all he had to offer. He held it out tentatively, not knowing if the Sandshrew would even be interested in human food. To his surprise, the Sandshrew took it gently in its paws and began to nibble on it, its cheeks puffing out with each bite. Rulg couldn't help but smile at the sight. It wasn't much, just a simple gesture of thanks, but in that moment, it felt like the most precious gift he could give. With the danger passed, he resumed his journey to the lab. His heart was still racing from the battle, but the exhilaration of witnessing a Dynamax event in person was a feeling that would stay with him forever. He couldn't wait to tell Professor Sonia about his encounter with the Sandshrew. As he walked, his thoughts raced ahead to the Pokémon he would choose as his starter. Would he find one as brave and loyal as the red-eyed Sandshrew? The lab was a beacon of light and activity when Rulg finally reached it. Professor Sonia's Yamper, a small, Electric type Corgi Pokémon with a tail that looked like a lightning bolt, barked a greeting as he approached. The Professor herself soon appeared at the top of the stairs, her eyes widening when she saw the sandwich-wielding boy. "You must be Rulg!" she exclaimed, her smile as warm as the sun that had been shining on him all morning. "Yep, that would be me. Heh. Thanks for having me, Professor." Rulg's voice cracked with a mix of nerves and excitement as he stepped into the lab. Professor Sonia's smile grew even wider as she descended the stairs. She was young for a Pokémon Professor, with her hair tied in a messy bun and her lab coat slightly askew, but the authority and knowledge in her eyes was undeniable. "So, you're here to choose your starter, huh?" she asked, her voice filled with the kind of enthusiasm that could only come from a lifetime of studying and loving Pokémon. Rulg nodded, his eyes darting to the table behind her. On it sat three Poké Balls, each one emanating a gentle glow that hinted at the life within. His heart skipped a beat as he realized that the time had come. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for the decision that would shape his journey. "Which one do you feel drawn to?" Professor Sonia asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. Rulg scanned the balls, his gaze lingering on each one. He thought of the fiery passion of Scorbunny, the steadfast strength of Grookey, and the gentle grace of Sobble. But as he was about to make his choice, he heard a faint scuffle behind him. Turning, he spotted the red-eyed Sandshrew that had been following him, peeking from behind his leg. It looked up at him with hopeful eyes, the crumbs of his sandwich still clinging to its furry face. His heart swelled with a warmth he hadn't expected. It had protected him without asking for anything in return. It was then that he knew—his starter Pokémon had already chosen him. Professor Sonia's gaze followed Rulg's, and she gasped. "What's this?" she said, bending down to inspect the Sandshrew. "This Sandshrew has a special connection to you, Rulg." Rulg knelt beside the Professor, his heart fluttering as the little Pokémon hugged his leg. The warmth of its embrace filled him with a sense of belonging. He had never felt this connected to a Pokémon before, not even the ones he had dreamed of catching and training. "It's the one I saved from the Rookidee," he said, his voice filled with wonder. Professor Sonia's eyes grew wide with understanding. "Ah, so this little one has chosen you!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. She took a step back, giving the pair some space. "But I never seen a Sandshrew with red eyes before. This is quite peculiar indeed!" The Sandshrew looked up at Rulg and gave a nod, as if confirming the Professor's words. Rulg felt a warm sensation spread through his chest, a feeling of destiny that was palpable. He reached down and gently stroked its back, feeling the warmth of its scales and the power that lay beneath them. The Sandshrew leaned into his touch, a clear sign of trust. Professor Sonia watched the exchange with a mix of amazement and curiosity. "The red eyes on this Sandshrew are indeed extraordinary," she mused, stroking her chin thoughtfully. "I suspect that means it has an even stronger bond to Dynamax energy than average Pokémon. This could make it incredibly powerful!" The Sandshrew tightened its grip on Rulg's leg, as if to confirm the Professor's words. It was a rare and special find, one that could potentially change the course of his entire journey. Rulg looked down at the small creature with a mix of awe and gratitude. It was the only Sandshrew in the entire world with eyes that burned like embers in the night, a beacon of strength and courage. "Sandshrew, do you want to come with me?" Rulg asked, his voice filled with hope. The little Pokémon looked up at him, its red eyes glowing with a fiery intensity ,"Sandshrew Sand!" it called out, as if affirming its decision. Rulg turned to Professor Sonia, "Could I, maybe, catch it as my starter?" Her eyes sparkled with excitement. "Of course!" she exclaimed, reaching into her pocket and pulling out a Poké Ball. "But remember, Rulg, catching a Pokémon is a sign of friendship and trust. You must treat it with care and respect. Are you ready for this responsibility?" Rulg nodded, his hands shaking slightly as he took the Poké Ball from Professor Sonia. It was heavier than he had imagined, the weight of his dreams and aspirations now resting in his palm. He looked down at the red-eyed Sandshrew, who stared back at him with unbridled hope. "I'm ready," he murmured, his voice barely a whisper. But as he went to toss the ball, something unexpected happened. The Sandshrew, with a swiftness that belied its size, dashed forward and leaped straight into the Poké Ball. The ball began to glow, and before Rulg could even blink, it was over. The Sandshrew was caught, and the ball clicked shut in his hand. He stared at it, his mouth agape, as if the world had just tilted on its axis. Professor Sonia chuckled at his shock, her eyes gleaming with amusement. "Well, it seems you've got yourself a starter, Rulg," she said, her voice filled with a gentle tease. "But that's not all you've got." Professor Sonia handed him a Pokédex, the latest model, sleek and shiny. "This will help you on your journey. It's a bit more advanced than what we usually give out to new trainers. It'll not only keep track of your Pokémon, but it will also give you information about the Dynamax phenomenon and the Pokémon you encounter." Rulg took the Pokédex, his heart racing. This was it. He was going to be a Pokémon Trainer. His mother's proud face flashed through his mind, and his excitement grew to the point that he could barely hold back his tears. He had dreamed of this moment for so long, and now it was real. The red-eyed Sandshrew, his savior from the Dynamaxed Rookidee, was going to be by his side. He felt a strange mix of fear and elation, his chest tightening as he realized the weight of the responsibility he had just accepted. As Professor Sonia explained the features of the advanced Pokédex, Rulg couldn't help but feel overwhelmed. The gadget was packed with information and capabilities he hadn't even considered. It was like holding a piece of the Pokémon world in his hands, a gateway to the incredible adventures that awaited him. He could feel his eyes misting over as he thought of all the battles they would face together, the friends they would make, and the places they would explore. Without warning, the Poké Ball in his hand began to quiver. The red light grew brighter, and the next moment, Sandshrew popped out of the ball, its red eyes gleaming with excitement. It looked around the lab, taking in the surroundings before turning back to Rulg, its gaze unwavering. The bond between them was palpable, and Rulg felt his heart swell with joy as the little creature leaped into his arms. Professor Sonia chuckled at the display. "It seems your new friend here is quite eager to stay out and explore," she said with a knowing smile. "But remember, it's important for a trainer and their Pokémon to build a strong bond outside of battle. Keeping it in the ball for long periods might make it feel lonely." Rulg nodded solemnly, stroking Sandshrew's back as it nuzzled into his neck. "I'll make sure to give it lots of time outside," he promised, his voice filled with affection. Professor Sonia nodded her approval, her eyes sparkling. "Good," she said. "Now, let's get you both registered in the system." The Professor led Rulg over to a computer terminal, where she began typing away at the keyboard. Sandshrew, still in Rulg's arms, watched with curiosity as the screen flickered to life, displaying a series of forms and documents. Professor Sonia's fingers danced over the keys, filling out the necessary information. "You'll need a Trainer ID," she said without looking up. "This will be your official license to compete in the Galar League." Rulg's eyes widened as he heard the words. "The Galar League?" he echoed. "But I'm just starting out." Professor Sonia chuckled. "Every journey begins with a single step," she said, her eyes twinkling. "And I have no doubt that with a Pokémon like that Sandshrew by your side, you'll go far." The computer beeped, and she spun the screen around to show Rulg his new Trainer ID. The number 329 stared back at him, a mirror of his birthday, March 29th. "Professor. Those numbers matches my birthday, was that intentional?" "Really? That's amazing!" Rulg exclaimed, feeling a strange sense of fate. Professor Sonia laughed warmly. "It's just a number, Rulg, but if it gives you luck, then hold onto it tight." With the registration complete, the Professor handed Rulg a pack of Pokémon supplies. "You'll need these," she said, her voice brimming with the excitement of a new journey. "Food, potions, Poke Balls, and a map of the region. Keep them close, and you'll do just fine." Rulg took the items with trembling hands, feeling the weight of his new responsibilities. Carefully, he placed the Pokédex into his pocket, feeling the coolness of the metal against his skin. He then stowed away the rest of the supplies into his backpack, ensuring that the Poké Balls were snug and secure. With a final pat on the side of the pack, he slung it over his shoulder, feeling the weight of his new journey pressing down on him. Looking at the Professor, he pulled out the Trainer ID card with a mix of pride and trepidation. It had his name, Rulg, and the number 329, which mirrored his birthday. He slipped it into a small pocket inside his jacket, feeling a sense of belonging. It was a symbol of the adventure that was now his to claim. He then carefully placed the Poké Ball containing his new friend into his bag, nestling it among the other supplies. He could feel the warmth of the ball through the fabric, a comforting presence. Professor Sonia watched him with a knowing smile. "You've got a good heart, Rulg," she said softly. "And that's what makes a truly great trainer. Remember to always listen to your Pokémon, and they will listen to you in return." Rulg nodded, his hand lingering on the Poké Ball. "Thank you, Professor," he said, his voice thick with emotion. He took a deep breath and stood up, the Pokédex and his newfound resolve weighing him down. "Let's get going, Sandshrew." "Sandshrew! Shrew!" Sandshrew exclaimed, hopping onto Rulg's shoulder with surprising agility. It clung to him with a firm grip, as if claiming its rightful spot beside its new trainer. Professor Sonia looked on with a knowing smile. "Ah, it seems Sandshrew has taken quite a liking to you," she said. "And it's a male, so you'll need to treat him right." Rulg chuckled nervously. "Him? I'll do my best, Professor." The red-eyed Sandshrew on his shoulder bobbed his head as if in agreement. It was a strange feeling, having this powerful creature so close to him, yet it felt surprisingly right. They stepped out of the lab into the bright afternoon sun, the warmth of the day wrapping around them like a comforting blanket. The world felt alive with the buzz of distant Pokémon, the rustle of grass beneath their feet, and the faint scent of blooming flowers. It was a stark contrast to the sterile environment of the lab, and Rulg took a deep breath, savoring the scent of adventure. "Well Sandshrew, it's you and me buddy." Rulg said, feeling a strange kinship with his new Pokémon. Sandshrew nodded his head in agreement," Sandshrew!" The journey ahead was filled with uncertainty and challenges, but Rulg felt ready. He had a map in his pocket, a Pokédex to guide him, and most importantly, a loyal companion by his side. As they left the lab behind, the path ahead stretched out before them like an uncharted map, full of promise and potential.
