**Impacts of Globalization on Communication (Simplified)** David Ingram explains that globalization has changed the way we need to communicate, especially in business. With people now working and interacting across different countries and cultures, communication skills have evolved. It\'s important to understand how to work with people far away, be aware of cultural differences in how people talk and use body language, and use technology to communicate globally. 1. **Virtual Interactions:** - Globalization has made virtual communication (like video calls and emails) a major part of work and school. We need to know the strengths and weaknesses of different communication tools to use them effectively. 2. **Cultural Awareness in Speech:** - Different cultures speak in different ways, even when using the same language. We need to be aware of these differences in vocabulary, tone, and expressions when communicating with people from other cultures. 3. **Cultural Awareness in Body Language:** - Just like speech, body language differs across cultures. Things like personal space, eye contact, and posture vary, so it\'s important to understand and respect these differences. 4. **Time Difference:** - Working with people in different parts of the world means dealing with different time zones, so communication requires flexibility and good planning to coordinate across time zones. **Impact of Globalization on Global Communication** According to Danev (2017), globalization has had three major effects on communication worldwide: 1. **Availability of Information:**\ Technologies like the internet, satellite TV, and mobile services have made it easy for people around the world to access information. The World Wide Web and other platforms allow people to share and receive data instantly. 2. **Business Communication:**\ Thanks to internet technology, businesses can exchange information and hold virtual meetings through video conferencing. This reduces the need for long-distance travel, making global business interactions quicker and more efficient. 3. **Social Awareness:**\ With easier access to information, people have become more socially aware. Information technology allows them to share opinions, collaborate on projects, and research various topics, which helps connect people globally. Additionally, there are two key challenges of globalization in communication: - **Cultural Awareness in Body Language:**\ Understanding body language differences between cultures is important. Different cultures have varying norms for speaking distances, eye contact, and posture, so what is acceptable in one culture might not be in another. - **Time Difference:**\ Global collaboration involves dealing with time zone differences, which adds complexity to communication. Managing this effectively requires careful coordination. **Aspects of Communication (Simplified)** Communication is how we share information with others. While it may seem simple, it has two key parts: 1. **Verbal or Linguistic Aspect**:\ This is communication through words, either spoken or written, formal or informal. 2. **Non-verbal or Extralinguistic Aspect**:\ This does not use words but still adds meaning to communication. It is divided into two types: **A. Non-linguistic Elements (Body Language):** - **Kinesics**: Body movements (e.g., hand gestures). - **Proxemics**: Use of space (e.g., how close or far you stand from someone). - **Chronemics**: Use of time (e.g., being late might show disrespect). - **Haptics**: Touch (e.g., comforting a friend by patting their back). - **Olfactics**: Smell (e.g., recognizing food by its scent). - **Oculesics**: Eye movement (e.g., making eye contact). - **Gustatory**: Taste (e.g., identifying flavors). - **Physical Appearance**: How someone looks can suggest their personality. **B. Paralinguistic Elements (How we speak):** - **Vocal Quality**: The tone of voice (e.g., soft-spoken may indicate shyness). - **Pitch**: The high or low sound of the voice. - **Tempo**: The speed of speaking. - **Volume**: The loudness of the voice. - **Juncture**: Pauses while speaking.
