To read them, hold the resistor such that the tolerance band is on your right The tolerance band is usually gold or silver in color and is placed a little further away from the other bands. Starting from your left, note down all the colors of the bands and write them down in sequence. Next, use the table given below to see which digits they represent. The band just next to the tolerance band is the multiplier band. So if the color of this band is Red (representing 2), the value given is 102. Tolerance=Value of resistor × value of tolerance band There are two ways to find the resistance value of a resistor. As shown in Fig. a & b , there are 4-band and 5-band resistors. For both 5- and 4-band resistors, the last band indicates the percentage of tolerance. 1 0 ×100 ±5% ) Fig. a ) 2 5 4 ×100 ±1% 2 ) Fig. b ) 4-Band: Reading the resistor from left to right, the first two color bands represent significant digits, the third band represents the decimal multiplier, and the fourth band represents the tolerance. Digit, Digit, Multiplier, Tolerance = (Color, Color × 10 color) ± Tolerance 5-Band: The first three color bands represent significant digits, the fourth band represents the decimal multiplier, and the fifth band represents the tolerance. Digit, color Digit, Digit, Multiplier, Tolerance = (Color, Color, Color × 10 ) ± Tolerance Example 1 : Determine the value of resistor with has blue, white, and black color ? Ans: First band is blue = 6 Second band is white = 9 The third band is black = 100 =1 The value of this resistor is (69 Ω) Example 2: Determine and record the nominal value, tolerance resistors shown in the following figure.
