Physical laboratory techniques are sets of procedures, methods and techniques that are used when studying physical and experimental sciences. This usually includes procedures to measure the physical properties of a substance and various techniques in separation of mixtures. Background Physical Laboratory procedures involve manipulating substances without altering their chemical structure, focusing on measuring physical properties like density and temperature. Common methods include filtration, chromatography, distillation, and centrifugation. Basic Physical Laboratory Techniques Weighing The process of identifying how heavy something is by usually using balances or scales. This is done to ascertain the force of gravity exerted on an object through various tools. The following are different types of weighing scales and balances: Filtration It refers to the process of separating solids from liquids or gases using a filter medium that allows certain substances to pass through while blocking others. Chromatography Chromatography is a laboratory method for separating, identifying, and purifying components in a mixture. It utilizes two phases: a stationary phase that stays fixed and a mobile phase that moves, allowing components to interact differently and separate accordingly. Centrifugation Centrifugation is a mechanical method that utilizes centrifugal force to separate mixture components by density. Spinning at high speeds causes denser particles to move outward, while lighter ones stay centered, making it effective for isolating cells or sediments in liquids. Distillation Distillation is a method that separates liquid mixtures based on boiling point differences. It heats the mixture to vaporize more volatile components, which are then condensed back into liquid, while less volatile substances stay behind, effectively purifying the solution. Materials Used in Physical Laboratory Techniques Centrifuge A centrifuge is a laboratory or industrial device that uses centrifugal force to separate components of a mixture based on their density. Chromatography Columns Chromatography columns are cylindrical devices used in chromatography to separate and analyze the components of a mixture. They serve as the housing for the stationary phase (solid or liquid) through which the mobile phase (liquid or gas) passes.
