These distinctly Asian character traits are as follows. 1). Spirituality, 2). Fatalism, 3). Stoicism, 4). Hospitality 5). Extended family relationships, 6). Sense of continuity, 7). Different views of time, life, and history, 8). Skill in indirect reasoning. Asian character traits Spirituality - Asia is the birthplace of the major religions. Spirituality is highly valued in Asia and may mean more than family, material possessions, or even personal cleanliness. Fatalism - Asians are fatalistic and believe that a person is a captive of or tied to superior forces or fate beyond their control (aka karma). They accept too easily that one’s freedom is limited by predestination, family, society, custom, nature and religion. Asian character traits Stoicism – Is the ability to suffer all kinds of hardship to survive, overcome or persevere and never give up. One of the oldest virtues of the Asian is to persevere with resignation through bereavement, pain, illness, misfortune and sorrow. Hospitality - Is the most cherished and admired tradition of Asians. No matter how humble their circumstances, an Asian takes great care to serve a guest. To an Asian, a guest is sacred, even if they happen to be the worst enemy. Asian character traits Extended family relationships -Mean strong bonds of love and loyalty among Asian family members. Asians obtain their security and greatest happiness from family. “ Blood is thicker than water,” is the traditional saying. It is not unusual to find several generations (Grandparents, Parents, and Children) living together under the same roof. Sense of Continuity - The close relationship between humans and the universe is carried over into occultic practices like feng shui (geomancy), nature worship, natural medicine, morals, and agriculture. Asian character traits Different views of time, life, and history - Orientals and Westerners regard life, time, and history in two quite different ways: 1.) cyclical and repeating; and 2.)Linear and progressive. Most Asians see life as a cycle, a seamless web connecting the past, present and future. They believe they go through many lives (reincarnation, purgatory and karma). These stages are controlled by many influence: fate, nature, Gods, good works, etc. Thus, there will always be another chance to do it right. Asian character traits Skill in indirect reasoning - Finally, Asians think and reason differently from the Greek logic of Westerners. A Westerners thinks explicitly and directly, to the point of being argumentative and rude. An Asian does not like to offend, or argue, or contradict. They use indirectness or lateral thinking. A lateral thinker approaches problems in an indirect and creative way, even to be contrary or devious. It may not be logical, but it is the Asian way to avoid or overcome a difficult situation. This indirectness is shown in the use of symbols in their art and language. Asian culture 1. Calendars & Time Measurement Mesopotamians created the first calendars.
