# Boyle's Law In 1662, chemist and physicist, Robert Boyle first observed the relationship between the Pressure (P) and volume (V). He found that if the pressure on a gas is increased, the volume it occupies will decrease proportionally. Boyle's law states that there is an inverse relationship between the pressure exerted on a quantity of gas and its volume if the temperature is held constant. Robert Boyle (1627 - 1691) **Boyle's law states that pressure is INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL to the volume at constant temperature.** * When volume increases, pressure decreases. When volume decreases, pressure increases. $P_1V_1=P_2V_2$ * $P_1$ = Initial Pressure * $P_2$ = Final Pressure * $V_1$ = Initial Volume * $V_2$ = Final Volume **Problems** 1. I've got a car with an internal volume of 12,000 L. If I drive my car into the river and it implodes, what will be the volume of the gas when the pressure goes from 1.0 atm to 1.4 atm? 2 A 3 L container has a gas pressure of 5 atm. If the volume decreased to 2 L, what will be the new pressure inside the container? 3. The volume of a gas at 17.5 psi decreases from 1.8 L to 750 mL. What is the new pressure of the gas in atm?
