# Isthmus and Bay/Gulf An isthmus is a narrow strip of land connecting two larger bodies of land. It has water on both sides. Well-known examples include the Isthmus of Panama connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and the Isthmus of Suez connecting the Mediterranean and Red Sea. A bay is a wide, semicircular indentation in the shoreline, typically found between two capes. It has a large opening leading to a larger body of water. A gulf is similar to a bay but is larger in size, with a smaller opening. The Arabian Gulf is a well known example of a gulf. The image also includes maps illustrating these geographical features. Large bodies of water are colored light blue or green. Landmasses are light beige, tan, or green. Some locations and islands are labeled, such as Gulf of Mexico, Arabian Gulf, British Virgin Islands, and others. There is a compass rose indicating directions. A scale of 100 km is also included.
