By working out relative ages, we can reconstruct the geologic history of a region. Unconformity Unconformities represent time intervals of nondeposition and possibly erosion. Where rock below the unconformity was folded or tilted before deposition of strata above, an angular unconformity occurs. Nonconformities juxtapose strata above with basement below. Strata above and below a disconformity are parallel, so a gap in the fossil record or evidence of erosion reveals the unconformity
