# Feeding Relationships and Ecological Pyramids **Food Chain** * Make sure arrows are in the right direction. **Ecological Pyramids** * Energy from one trophic level to the next trophic level. Only about 10% of the energy transfers. * Each trophic level can support fewer organisms than the last. * 10% of energy goes to the next trophic level * 90% is lost from heat. * 100 kg of producers transfers to first trophic level. **Trophic Levels** * The trophic level depends on how many steps it is from the producer. * 1st trophic level/autotrophs/producer (grass) * 2nd trophic level/primary consumers (grass hopper) * Secondary consumers (rats) * Top consumers (wolf) **Diagram** A diagram illustrating a food chain and ecological pyramid is present. Arrows show the flow of energy between organisms. A pyramid depicts energy transfer between trophic levels. The pyramid shows that the producers (for example grass) have a lot of energy, then it decreases as you move up the trophic levels. **Example Diagram Illustration** -Sun (or Chem) -> Grass -> Grass Hoppers -> Rat -> Wolf -100% energy transferred through the food chain
