Near Space Checklist Sun-Earth: Day and Night on Earth The Sun-facing side of planet is light The Earth rotates on its axis, anticlockwise as viewed from above the North Pole Position of Sun in sky at dawn, midday and dusk Time zones Year & Seasons The Earth year is defined as the period of one orbit of the Earth around the Sun We need leap years because the time taken to orbit is not a whole number of days but 365.25 days The tilt of the Earth’s axis explains why we have seasons Variation in day length with season and position on Earth Variation in temperature, away from the Equator The tilt of Earth’s axis means that the light from the Sun is more spread out onto the ground during winter, making it less intense than in summer and therefore winters are colder. Earth-Moon: The Moon is visible from Earth due to reflection of light from the Sun The Phases of Moon can be explained by how much of the lit side is visible from Earth We always see the same side of the Moon from the Earth because the Moon is rotating on its axis as it orbits the Earth In a Solar Eclipse the Moon is in between the Earth and the Sun, and part of the Earth is in the shadow of the Moon In a Lunar Eclipse the Earth is in between the Sun and the Moon, and the Moon is in the shadow of the Earth
