QUIZ 1 **GOD CREATED US TO WORK.** God works when he creates. He calls us to do something similar. When we work, this activity reflects something about God. Human work reveals another essential doing things that difference between human beings and animals. The Book of Genesis says that God took Adam and \"settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate it and take care of it\" (Gen 2:1 5). God told Adam and Eve: \"Be fruitful multiply, fill the earth and conquer it\" (Gen 1:28). ***God did this because work forms part of being God\'s image and likeness.*** From the beginning, therefore, man is called to work. Work is one of the characteristics that distinguishes man from the rest of creatures. Only man is capable of work, and only man works. Thus work bears a particular mark of man and of humanity, the mark of a person operating within a community of persons (*John Paul Il, On Human Work, n.1*) Like animals, we do things, at times, just to survive: we breathe, we eat, we drink, etc. But unlike animals, we also spend time doing things that have no immediate benefit. Sometimes we do something even though we will never benefit from it. We do it knowing that others will benefit. We plant trees to provide shade that we will never see, hoping our children will see it. We do this gladly, thinking of the way others will enjoy the fruits of our labor. God is the first one to work. He is the first one to do things that do not benefit him, benefiting others instead. He creates not because it will make him happy. He was already infinitely happy before creating and would have been infinitely happy without creating anything. He creates only to make us happy. When we work, when we serve others, it makes us like Cod. We imitate the Creator by working as he works, focusing on others instead of focusing on self. [Christian materialism] One of the saints talked about learning how to "materialize\" our spiritual lives: There is only one life, made of flesh and spirit. And it is this life, which has to become, in both body and soul, holy and filled with God, we discover the invisible God in the most visible and material things. Either we learn to find our Lord in ordinary, everyday life, or we shall never find him. That is why 1 tell you that our age needs to give back to matter and to the apparently trivial events of life their noble original meaning (St Josemaria, Passionately Loving the World, nn.2-3). God asks us to work so that we can find him through our work. [Working together with God] Having children takes lots of work. All human work can be an act of cooperating with God. Bearing children-and passing the faith to them is one of the most important ways in which Christians cooperate in the work of creation. Not only do couples bring new life into this world They bring children into existence who can live with God forever in Paradise [VIRTUES RELATED TO CHRISTIAN WORK ETHICS] Virtue is a good moral quality that involves doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong Christian work ethics refer to a set of values that determine or guide how Christians approach and perform work.
